Well, there is one misconception dispelled about Memphis that cannot be refuted. Although, sometimes a spin can be put on it such as.....Indiana never wanted him anyway.

Puerto Rican forward Angel Garcia has given a verbal commitment to play basketball at the University of Memphis, sources with knowledge of the situation have told The Commercial Appeal.

Garcia was considered one of the Tigers' top targets, especially after the 6-foot-11 inch forward put on an awesome display of athleticism and skill at coach John Calipari's elite summer camp in June.

Garcia, ranked No. 27 overall in the class of 2008 by Rivals.com, chose Memphis over Indiana. Garcia moved to the U.S. last season and played at East Chicago (Ind.) Central High. He played this summer for the Puerto Rican National Team at the under-19 championships in Serbia, where Memphis assistant coach Chuck Martin traveled to watch him play.

Once Garcia signs a national letter of intent, he'll join twin forwards Marcus and Markieff Morris in the class of 2008, seemingly giving the Tigers a solid front line for the next few years. Memphis is still hoping to get a commitment from an elite guard, the No. 1 target being St. George's Elliot Williams.

The past doesn't win titles. Army has football tradition. That won't win it a championship. The ability to adapt and connect with today's talent does win titles. Memphis is competitive in that angle. Memphis' present is an improvement over its past, and its future is promising. It's easy to overlook them b/c of its conference. But don't be foolish.

Rankings on rivals.com are fun to debate, but I'd take them with a grain of salt. Jamarcus Ellis, the JUCO player of the year and a flat out stud, wasn't ranked by Rivals.

It is actually 9 Top 120 players for Memphis and 5 Top 120 for IU. So, if someone gets in foul trouble, Memphis has a decided advantage. In terms of rotating quality players in and out of the game, Memphis has a greater advantage and can keep their best players more rested. And Dorsey is underrated since he is projected to go #40 in the upcoming draft and will be a definate NBA pick. Allen was a two-time Tennessee Class AA Mr. Basketball pick in 2002 and 2003 and had many scholarship offers from SEC and other Division One schools. He decided he would rather "walk on" at Memphis.

No need to take pot shots mini-me...our own program was at a depth that I wish to forget just 7-8 yrs ago. You are right about IU's championship, but lets not forget that they are a little farther along in terms of history in that regard than we are. I will not discredit IU's history, but their perception of where they are now versus us is a bit skewed.

Since Indiana's last championship was 2 years before Garcia was an embryo I don't think their ancient history will have much to do with his decision.

Kelvin Sampson has been bouncing around for 21 years now. He is the least respected coach in the Big Ten. Maybe the country. Hiring him shows just how low Indiana's program has sunk.

Exactly how many guys has Sampson had drafted in 21 years as a head coach? Face it, the kids of Garcia's caliber these days go to school as a means to an end. They are not looking to create a legacy or to contribute to national prominence only in as much as that it will assist them in getting where they want to go. You guys have the tradition (I lived in Indy for 2 years and absolutely loved it), but even you have to admit that it has been a while since you have been a real player on the national scene, although MD made some waves before the boot. Memphis has not been to a title game since 1973, and a Final Four since 1985. But in the time since then, one of the worst periods in our school's history, we still have managed 4 elite eights and a number of tourney appearances. Nothing that I would write home about yet, but not dog spit either. The kid will go where he wants. I hope it is Memphis, but if he chooses IU, I and many others will wish him the best, as well as IU. We never seem to want for talent, and with Cal as our Coach (how many national sports programs has Sampson been on? Cal is a regular on ESPN and BDSSP) we will be fine either way.

I see both sides of the argument, but here's how I'll sum up my viewpoint.

- Yes, Memphis has been better than IU over the past few seasons. No one can or is disputing that.

- Memphis probably has nicer facilities (I haven't seen them myself) than IU. That's something IU is addressing because they need to keep up with other programs.

- Coaching wise, I think Cal and KS are both very good coaches and can recruit talent.

- Tradition wise, no one would argue that IU has a huge edge.

- Exposure as far as TV goes, IU gets the nod. Although Memphis does get its fair share of exposure as well and they are deserving of their preseason ranking with what they have returning.

As far as being preseason #1, that means nothing. Just the same as IU being preseason #10 or whatever they will be also means nothing.

This whole argument has gone way off topic. This post was about Garcia and his recruitment. He'll be pleased with whatever school he chooses. This is really not even important enough to be arguing about.
