Good, Bad and Ugly: Pitt
While very few Memphis fans would put Memphis on scale with Indiana's tradition, the fact remains that Memphis is on Cloud Nine at the moment following back-to-back Elite Eight finishes and a #1 preseason ranking by several polls (including ESPN). Calipari has done an excellent job recruiting during his tenure including several top 10 classes.
Believe it or not, Cal also is excellent with the media and get Memphis on national television a lot. While I'm not surprised you might not realize it, Memphis was on national television 16 times last year NOT counting the C-USA Conference Final and the NCAA tournament (of which the Texas A&M and Ohio State games were national).
Memphis played on CBS once v. Houston. Memphis played on ESPN 10 times in the regular season - vs. Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Tennessee, Cincinnati, SMU, UAB, Gonzaga, Rice and UTEP. They also played once on Fox Sports Network (national) vs. Arizona and four times on CSTV (vs. UAB, East Carolina, Tulsa and SMU.
CSTV is widely available on cable systems across the country, including Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, Cablevision, Charter, Insight, Bright House Networks, Mediacom, Insight, RCN, Advanced Cable and Bresnan. It is also available on DIRECTV's Total Choice Premier Package Channel 610 and DISH Network's America's Top 120 Package Channel 152.
In addition, Memphis also played another eight times on Comcast/Charter Southeast - a regional broadcast reaching 5.8 million households across 12 states.
And, the rest of their games in the regular season were shown locally in the Memphis metropolitan area.
Expect a similar breakdown in 2007-2008.
It'll be interesting to see what involvement, if any, Worldwide Wes has with Garcia.
Big A...worldwide wes is somewhere in the mix...you have to know it!
I think you fail to see my point. I (and mostly realistic Memphis fans) don't pretend to place Memphis in the level of IU, Kansas, Kentucky, Duke or UNC. Considering Memphis' is a commuter, non-BCS school, it doesn't have the fan base or the money base to compete year in and year out. However, Calipari has done an excellent job getting Memphis on a top 10 competitive level.
Say what you will about Cal and Worldwide Wes (to which only Dajuan Wagner was influenced and brought to Memphis), but Cal has taken little known talents like Rodney Carney, straight out of Indianapolis mind you, and created a NBA lottery pick. Mike Davis seemed to over look that one.
I don't dispute any of what you just said. I just think your argument about both teams getting similar exposure nationally was flawed. I don't consider Fox Sports or CSTV to be national games. ESPN, ESPN 2, CBS, those are national games that people actually watch.
However, Memphis' ten games on ESPN were ALL either ESPN or ESPN 2 (I checked).
Memphis this year will probaly receive as much exposure nationally as they ever have given the team they have returning. I like their team, although I think Dorsey is overrated, but that is another story. But as it all relates to Garcia, as I told the writer...yes Angel is from PR but the kid got a BIG dose this year of INDIANA basketball and having played in the 1-class era in the region...Once you get a taste of what it is all about, it is hard for a kid to leave it.
As for Joey Dorsey - I think he is about the third most important player for Memphis. His defense is solid (though foul prone). His offensive is severely lacking considering he is a senior. Outside of two feet , he has no game. As such Memphis is 100% dependent on penetration /slashers and 3-point shooting.
Might want to checks your facts bro.
the SECOND you count Memphis out is when Angel will pull a Derrick Rose and leave you going, "hey, what the heck just happened?"
oh, and with 18 year old kids...what Bobby Knight did 10-15 years ago doesn't mean much...they care about locker-rooms, practice courts, style of play, and NBA experience.
good luck!
Go Tigers!
I think Indiana basketball fans don't consider Memphis when we think of elite programs or recruiting, primarly because "it's Memphis, Conference USA, No banners, average H.S. basketball talent, and No real basketball history".
And if you think kids are coming to IU for the locker rooms and practice courts you are sadly mistaken....Just ask Eric Gordon, Devin Ebanks, Bud Mackey...it those Banners above the Asembly Hall, it is a genuine coach, and it is "Indiana Basketball that starts in High School".....Kids know what it means to us here in this state.
And you mention Derrick Rose. He is a very good player and will do very well at Memphis, but don't go over board with your website predicting him the #1 pick in the 08 draft....Check this out....
"Despite Oden's presence, the most tantalizing matchup featured North Central (Indianapolis) vs. Simeon (Chicago). A pair of juniors, 6-4 Eric Gordon and 6-3 Derrick Rose, did battle to help determine the pecking order for guards in the Class of 2007. These solo showdowns typically fizzle and offer inconclusive results, but in this case it was a clear victory for Gordon, an early Illinois commitment who outscored his Windy City counterpart 32 points to six."
What you just read was from the USA Today, discussing a High School match up when Simeon and D.Rose faced North Central and EJ. Now points are not everything but seriously....32 to 6!
I think Memphis as a good chance at getting Garcia, I still think IU is the front runner. But to compare a Memphis to IU, is really a joke. You have to hang at least 1 BANNER, make a final 4 in the next decade, and have a RECRUITING CLASS..NOT one player! I am willing to bet you can't name 3 recruits from your 07' or 08' class COMBINED.
Oh wait...here is your first one ...Derrick Rose!
DallasTiger...I love your support of your team and HOPE we play Memphis at somepoint, although it will be a bigger game for Memphis than IU. We just don't get excited for Conf. USA teams...sorry.
by the way DJ White was far far far better than Joey "Greg Oden's is overrated" Dorsey in the Pan Am Games.
I have seen Indiana ranked anywhere from 6-10 but again...it is preseason. If you want to celebrate preseason rankings go for it.
One thing DallasTiger you cannot ARGUE as a reasonble guy is Indiana has a FAR FAR better basketball tradition than Memphis. In the last two years Memphis has had more success, I will give you that. But Indiana having a coaching change is back in the Mix as an Elite program...
Although Memphis has all of its returners back this year, if you go player for player, you will see Indiana has MORE talent.
You know DJ White is better than Greg Odens son Joey Dorsey, you know but you won't admit Eric Gordon is slightly better than Derrick Rose, you know Indiana has a better recruiting class than Memphis this year (check the ratings), and the Juco national player of the year Jamarcus Ellis is better than "transfer player".
Will you admit any of this? or will you continue to ignore the FACTS and boast about these 30-40 banners at the FED EX FORUM? 30-40 banners, wow is there any room for lights up there?
IU averaged 70.2 ppg last year, so your argument really holds no weight. They also hit 252-661 from three for 38 percent. By comparison, Memphis hit 278-792 for 35 percent in a conference where they were clearly head and shoulders above every other team.
You obviously didn't watch IU at all last year because there was no slow down, body banging, no blood no foul scheme to be found.
Nice try though.
Eric Gordon is better than Rose? See who is in the #1 position on the above link. Also check out #40. Not my opinion, just trying to be objective. Anyone from Memphis know how many banners we have? I know there are a lot of them in the FED EX forum. Last time I was there muching on my Chateaubriand and sipping an Absolute Vodka Martini in one of the FEF restaurants I noticed they took up a lot of space in the FEF rafters.
GO CARDS!
but hey, you're the folks in the stands, so enjoy your banners!
DallasTiger if you guys get Garcia I will send you congrats, and most importantly if you acheive Memphis Basketball Utopia and win the Conference USA title and make the elite eight I will be the first to send you well wishes.....
As for IU....Aifare to San Antonio from Indianapolis is $240 roundtrip..I am booking it tonight!
sad really.
I see both sides of the argument, but here's how I'll sum up my viewpoint.
- Yes, Memphis has been better than IU over the past few seasons. No one can or is disputing that.
- Memphis probably has nicer facilities (I haven't seen them myself) than IU. That's something IU is addressing because they need to keep up with other programs.
- Coaching wise, I think Cal and KS are both very good coaches and can recruit talent.
- Tradition wise, no one would argue that IU has a huge edge.
- Exposure as far as TV goes, IU gets the nod. Although Memphis does get its fair share of exposure as well and they are deserving of their preseason ranking with what they have returning.
As far as being preseason #1, that means nothing. Just the same as IU being preseason #10 or whatever they will be also means nothing.
This whole argument has gone way off topic. This post was about Garcia and his recruitment. He'll be pleased with whatever school he chooses. This is really not even important enough to be arguing about.
Kelvin Sampson has been bouncing around for 21 years now. He is the least respected coach in the Big Ten. Maybe the country. Hiring him shows just how low Indiana's program has sunk.

Puerto Rican forward Angel Garcia has given a verbal commitment to play basketball at the University of Memphis, sources with knowledge of the situation have told The Commercial Appeal.
Garcia was considered one of the Tigers' top targets, especially after the 6-foot-11 inch forward put on an awesome display of athleticism and skill at coach John Calipari's elite summer camp in June.
Garcia, ranked No. 27 overall in the class of 2008 by Rivals.com, chose Memphis over Indiana. Garcia moved to the U.S. last season and played at East Chicago (Ind.) Central High. He played this summer for the Puerto Rican National Team at the under-19 championships in Serbia, where Memphis assistant coach Chuck Martin traveled to watch him play.
Once Garcia signs a national letter of intent, he'll join twin forwards Marcus and Markieff Morris in the class of 2008, seemingly giving the Tigers a solid front line for the next few years. Memphis is still hoping to get a commitment from an elite guard, the No. 1 target being St. George's Elliot Williams.
More details to follow in Monday's editions of The Commercial Appeal.
I guess that settles that.
NOW WE GET GARCIA & THE MARKEIFF TWINS COMING HERE NEXT YEAR..AND THE ONLY PEOPLE WE'RE LOSING IS DORSEY & ROSE IN '08!! AND MAYBE DOUGLAS-ROBERTS IF HE HAS A GREAT 07-08 YEAR..BUT WE'RE NOT DONE RECRUITING THE CLASS OF '08...WE'RE STILL AFTER ELLIOT WILLIAMS(FROM MEMPHIS) & TYREKE EVANS( ONE OF THE TOP 5 PLAYERS IN THE NATION)...IF EITHER ONE OF THEM COMES HERE,WE WILL DEFINITELY BE MAKING NOISE IN YEARS TO COME!!! WE ARE QUIETLY BUILDING A POWERHOUSE DOWN HERE IN MEMPHIS..JUST LIKE TARKANIAN & THE UNLV RUNNIN REBELS DID IN THE MID-80'S & EARLY 90'S..THEY CAME FROM A MID MAJOR CONF ALSO & UNTIL THEY WON IT ALL IN 1990,PEOPLE LOOKED DOWN ON THEM & SAID SOME OF THE SAME JUNK I'M READING ON THIS POST THATS BEING SAID ABOUT MEMPHIS...
AND OH YEAH-I WILL LIKE TO WELCOME ANGEL GARCIA TO THE CITY OF MEMPHIS..YOU MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE!! THE RUN & GUN OFFENSE OF OURS WAS MADE FOR PLAYERS LIKE YOU!
