PMK I agree totally ....kurt/kent benson has not been heard from since 1976. I am sure he made himself available all of sudden for comments. Now where is Ted Kitchel when you need him and no IU is still not recruiting your son TEDDY. EVERY person that wants KS fired will not be heard from 6 weeks from now when IU is rollin' with maybe 1-2 losses......KS is WRONG, SENDEROFF IS WRONG. You are right Senderoff is a glorified manager now but it is the price to pay.

Couldn't agree more about Kurt Benson and his comments. I do not understand where some dude who I couldn't point out in a crowd of two people gets sought out for his comments. Yes, I understand that he was on an IU national title team (back in the 70's or something, who knows?). But let's add a little perspective to that for those Hoosier fans: 1987 was our last title. In the year 1987, it is safe to say that very few, if any, freshman currently enrolled at Indiana were even born (including some sophs) when the streets of Kirkwood last flooded with such glee.

To sum it up, Kurt Benson: Shut your mouth. Can someone please offer this guy a job so he stops meddling in the affairs of our basketball program?

Do you think Devin Ebanks gives a shit what some tall, lanky, white guy who played basketball in the 70's thinks about Coach Sampson? No, he doesn't, so lets stick to the story lines that are important here.

It isn't like our program and its people are going unpunished here. Sampson's assistant coach (senderoff) is basically losing his job over this. If you are an assistant who can't recruit off campus, you don't have much to offer. Sampson lost a scholarship and $500K. That is plenty enough. I just wish he were more intelligent about circumventing the rules,so we didn't have to hear about it.

In order to compete today, a Coach has to be creative. Sampson was doing exactly that and I don't think less of him as a person nor do I think less of his integrity. 10 calls over the limit is just dumb, and nothing more. Oops, should have been a little more careful about that. Ok, let's move on and win basketball games.

I understand from the media-juggernaut known as the "Indy Star" that IU has had no major infractions with the NCAA since 1960. What do I say? When they start hanging banners for crap like that, let me know.

I am sure such a stat is what lured Eric Gordon here, and the reason that we had such a stud class at Hoosier Hysteria. That is laughable.

Until then, take stats like the one above, Kurt Benson, and all the others who can't grasp the fact IU needs to move into the year '07 and put them in Assembly Hall when we implode it and build a new arena. That would be a fitting end to all the nonsensical garbage about our "tradition".

I believe that Sampson never they were 3 way calls. First Sendehoff's name has tobe programed into Sampson's cell phone. So when the calls came in with Senderhoff name and someone else is on the line you have to know it's a 3 way call.

Who knows what the NCAA will do, we should know something in the next couple of weeks.

One thing I do know is that Kent Benson saying Kelvin Sampson should be fired should have no impact on the whole situation.

Rarely to I agree with Kravitz at the Indy Star, in fact, I believe this is the first time. Sampson should be sent packing and the AD should follow right behind him. Shame on you IU, and the previous President, for hiring both of them!

It is 2007 who cares what you think, go hang out with the 72 dolphins and show up when we need you. If IU goes to the final 4 you will be there in your old uniform and the candy stripes. I am sick of him always piling on when something goes down.

I read that Stephenson, Dennis and Strickland were all impressed. Also read that Ebanks wasn't too worried about Sampson and the phone calls.

On a lighter note, has anybody gotten any news on the reaction of the recruits who were in attendance at midnight madness? Apparently Dexter Strickland and Nolan Dennis were VERY impressed. Any news?

I agree with Big A....if we get out of our emotions of this and look at the big picture...firing him would cause the same firestorm you had for a FULL year in MD's last year. Will McCallum be the new coach? Will EJ stay? Will Ebanks, Roth, Elston, Pritchard, stay...Will all the recruits that are considering IU take them off the list...

I don't think anyone wants that at all. Trust me, MD's last year to me was more of a disaster than this is making out to be.

I want KS to get it right..and get it right now now now. He is getting the recruiting right, he is getting the talent level right...he is getting the academics piece on the right path...it is time to get these phone calls right. I find it interesting that in a matter of 48hours, Kelvin Sampson is the worst person in the world or at least at IU. Which goes to show you this.....

Years ago, I attended a President's Roundtable at the American Management Association in Chicago. One of our discussion leaders asked the group if we would fire someone for stealing and everyone raised their hand in unison. He then asked the group how many had taken a pencil, pen, etc. from their place of work during their work career. Again, everyone raised their hand. The speaker then announced that we were all fired. I don't think anyone in the room agreed with his thought.
I am terribly disappointed with the basketball situation, however cooler heads need to prevail.

I understand the frustration and betrayal that some fans are feeling, however, some of the stances (i.e. Bob Kravitz) to fire Sampson are way over the top. Firing him kills all momentum that the program has gained over the past 18 months. I'm all for holding him accountable and I think the university has. He's going to be our coach until Rick Greenspan says otherwise so I feel the best course of action right now is to focus on the season we have coming up and support the team.

I understand no one wants cheating, or even the shadow of cheating, at your school ... but then you've got to be willing to accept a consistently mediocre IU team. If you're willing to do that, fine. But ask Illinois fans how they feel it.

This new recruiting violation by sampson, and the cheating by other coaches.....i think it is mainly caused by the ncaa having myriad picky rules written by people like myles brand who have nothing better to do than micromanage something they know very little about. Let's simplify the freaking rules and enforce them strictly.......break these simple (10 pages or less) rules and lose your coaches license for x number of years......and only let teams with licensed coaches into the ncaa tourney........
Today the ncaa rules are like the tax code, just ask the General.

Sampson is the public face of Indiana Basketball, and as long as he is there, that image will be tarnished. Some IU fans may hope and believe his unethical misconduct will be forgotten. It's wishful thinking. It will be brought up endlessly--Sampson, the repeat cheater. Is that the image Indiana wants? Whether it likes it or not, that's the image it has for a coach.

I am a former h.s. coach here in indy and yes I was very very adament about following the rules big and small, cause I know so many coaches openly didn't. I knew of coaches in my building that encouraged me to "work the system" to build a good team and win!....using fake addresses etc. I didn't want to build a program that way so I took the other route.

Just when you think IU is building itself back to a national power, this happens. To start over AGAIN for a 3rd time would be REALLY bad. Will winning make this go away? How soon we forget in the sports world....Spygate and New England!

I'm not naive. Of course there are other schools cheating. Not a month goes by that the NCAA doesn't punish someone and another school announces self-reported violations. But until today, Indiana had never been the school.

What I said still stands, I don't give a rat's ass if every other school in the country is cheating. You can tell me it's not that bad and you can tell me others are doing it too. But I don't care.

My first reaction was a sense of betrayal because I placed strong faith in Sampson as a coach and a person. My gut feeling told me dismissal should considered. It is incomprehensible that he and the assistant coach would do anything not strictly within the rules. But a in some degree of calmness, it's my belief the violations don't merit dismissal. Also, I don't think it would be fair to the players to ruin their high hopes for the upcoming season by depriving them of a qualified head coach. The many good things Sampson has done, as a coach and within the community at large, allow me to still have faith in him. I believe the penalties meted out by the university are sufficient and he should be given another chance.

I agree that in the short term firing Samspson now would be a disaster. It would cripple our season. In the long term, though, it would send the message that our institution does not tolerate cheating in any capacity. I wish it wasn't like this. Winning isn't nearly as important as playing by the rules, and considering the Sampson broke these rules for the second time, when he should have been paranoid about them because of his experience, his actions are indefensible. He even said it in his news conference (taking responsibilty)

And yes, fire Senderoff, too. I am a high school basketball coach. Though the rules aren't nearly as rigid as the NCAA's, our entire staff understands clearly that we have a responsibilty to the players, school and community to be aware of the rules, and pay attention to detail (in everything we do).

You raise good questions. Who takes over? I really have no idea. I am glad I'm not making the decisions (but I hope IU does what I feel is the right thing). I'd love Hubie Brown though.

Yes I'm disappointed again that a coach of a major basketball program does not understand the penalities of such consequences not to mention the possibilities of missing out on the recruitment of Tyler Zoller. Even though this infraction seems minor it's still wrong. How could this happen again? Once the season begins and the Hoosiers win I suspect this will be forgotten. If this is front page news how about the recent recruiting visit Zoller had at NC? Will this be investigated by NC and NCAA?

Hoosierdaddy....firing him now does what to this team. Lets be honest here, although none of this involves these kids, it does still involve these kids. If he gets fired what does that do for them...2 days into the season? Who takes over? SHould Senderoff be fired?
