Good, Bad and Ugly: Loyola (Md.)
"Jordan Crawford is wise beyond his years. "
Apparantly, like Postman E, his DVR broke, and has been broken since October.
Next week will be a real test for us at Wisconsin and I think we'll have a better feel for how our season will go.
EJ - Seriously good defense and much better securing the ball last night - A
DJ - Does what he does...I cant believe this is the same player that couldn't run or jump his first 3 years. Missed some automatic jumpers in the 2nd as well as lost some rebounds but overall very good game - A
Armon - Good defense and the ability to get separation. Made some great plays that les to transition buckets - A
Ellis - Great D and better decision making. Still feels like he has to get his spasms out of the way every once and a while with the ball. Was way more aggressive in the second half which I would like to see more of - A (yeah...after a game like this, who can honestly give out less than a B?)
Dre - Good D and hustle...still makes some of those head scratching plays on Defense but his bucket at the end of the half was a beauty. Still cringe when he shoots anything outside of 8 feet. - B
Crawford - Looks as if he is progressing on the Defensive end...still makes lazy passes but he is a Freshman and if some people can make lazy posts on their own freakin website, I will give him a pass too - B
Stemler - Misfiring on 3's but still doing the little stuff it takes like hustle....and flopping - B+
Ratliff - ummm...well....he has a horde of attractive white women, which is more than I can say for most of us...for that he gets a B
Overall a lot better causing turnovers (even though Iowa doesn't need much help) and a lot better job on Freeman this time around. Gorney also looks like the ex of the fat girl on Shallow Hal (the bad version obviously)...anyway thats my 2 cents but I'm known more for bathroom humor than basketball knowledge.
I'm don't have any stats to justify my claim, just from going to all the home games and watching on t.v., i'm more confident when Basset puts up a shot it will go in then anyone else on the team.
If he's healthy, come tourny time he, Gordon, White and Ellis should be playing around 33-40 minutes a game barring foul trouble.
Also - Good work by IU in general for piling up the wins during the easy part of their schedule. It's going to get rough the next few weeks, (@ Wisconsin and @ Illinois being the next two Big Ten road games), but give the Hoosiers credit for doing what they were supposed to do and beating the lower level teams in the conference so far.
Here are your stats
Bassett 31-59 (53%) from 3 point range
Gordon 45-109 (41%) from 3 point range
Bassett's looks are WIDE open. Gordon gets smothered on offense, and many of his shots happen 5 feet behind Bassett's. For a kid to shoot 41% on NBA 3's and fadeaway 3's is ridiculous.
EJ's shot is as pure as you'll find. I think this stat will see a serious correction in the 2nd half of the season.
Have you guys noticed in the past 4-5 games that EJ's scoring has dipped while DJ's is steadily picking up.? At the end of the season, we may have the top 2 Big Ten scoring leaders.
T and Smitty, if IU needed one player to take a 3 with the clock winding down, would you have EJ or Bassy come off picket fence?
Also, just read that the reason Mike White was used so little last night was because he wasn't showing any energy during practice. Looks like Sampson wanted to 'pull the string.' At least he is showing an ability to sit players down for not performing to his standards.
I'd also be remiss if I didn't speak out about the picture - which, some might argue, depicts a TIVO box committing suicide. After all the uproar over beautiful women are we really going to sit idly by when pictures depicting much more vulgar acts are on display on such a fantastic web site? This site is after all, all about IU basketball, right?
What was shown before was women in bikini's; a picture of a sideline reporter; and the occasional cheerleader. If you are offended by these images, I weep for your poor, troubled soul.
Our offense was very fluid. There was a lot of off the ball movement and away from the ball screening. I noticed this a lot on the part of EJ, he moved around more this game instead of waiting 6 feet off the 3pt line for half the shot clock. Everytime DJ got the ball in the post he was immidiately looking for the double team to come and kept himself in good position to react accordingly. JaMarcus once again did a bit of everything and in my opinion is the most important part ot our offense, he simply gets people involved and makes plays. I don't know what Bob Kravits was talking about in todays IndyStar regarding "The Undisciplined One", maybe he just means he is OVERALL better than the average freshman..which i can agree to, but he still needs to be a headier player. Also, does anyone else cringe when Deandre tries to throw the full court overhead outlet pass? Props for having the brain wave to do so, but thats three (I think in a row) this year I have seen from him that are just NOT on the money at all...makse me dream of having Kevin Love arms on his body...but we'll leave that alone.
Our defense last night was STELLAR. Hands down suffocating. Anytime a man picked up his dribble on the perimeter we extended our defense and double-teamed. We forced A LOT of turnovers this way, as well as recognizing screens and staying on our men. I didn't notice to many times where we overplayed a pass only to get burnt for a field goal, our timing was just on. EJ played a hell of a defensive game, he kept his feet moving and did a lot less swatting at the ball...Armon was great as well on the ball.
Overall we played superb last night. If we can hold on to this and keep our heads together for this next game vs. Uconn, I think we will have really built some serious chemistry and momentum heading into our roadie at Wisconsin. I'm not trying to look past this next game, but a win on the road in Wisky will definitely give me reason to believe we can be a very succesful tournament team. Great win, great WAY to win, keep it together and get one against the Huskies. Peace B's. -J$
Most of his looks are wide open. He shoots a high percentage like most good PG's should.
Bassett's 3s, especially in the last game were not exactly "open" he frequently has a hand in his face and on one, he simply just pulled up on his man and nailed it. Going 5-6 from three point range a few games ago is impressive, regardless of how "open" he's perceived to be. I've watched EJ miss plenty of open 3s this year.
Since I'm not an IU coach, I can't get the video out and look at every three, but I'd be interested to see that analysis and to have those two have a go at a three point shooting contest. I wouldn't be as quick as the rest of you to bet money on EJ.
In any case, we've got two exceptional three point shooters who only make the other better. So who really cares in the long run, right?
Go Hoosiers!
