Inside the Hall: Scouting notes from Saturday’s Elite Camp

Roth can get time at the end of games like Kentucky when we'll be only 5 "Roths" behind.
  • plane1972 · 2 months ago
Agreed. I'm not sure what a redshirt does for Roth. Like Todd Leary, he can be good when the defensive attention is on others. Our new and improved guard corps should make Roth a valuable specialist.

I would not count out D. Elston or Hulls as the frosh having the most impact on this team. Elston came in with close to a big ten body and every time I have seen him, his game intensity is on 100. He gives you that "if you score on me I will BUST you in the face" look.....Elston will be a "crowd" favorite.....

The best thing I can say about Hulls is, he knows HOW TO PLAY THE GAME and he is a WINNER.

To be honest the person I'm interested to watch is Bawa. Right now I fully believe that in order to win a NC Bawa has to become the defensive stopper with those long arms. With his athletic abilities I want him to be a fierce rebounder, the person that will make guards think twice before driving to the rim, and can occasionally throw down a dunk with authority. I'm hoping to see a better improved bawa by the time we hit the big ten season. I'm hoping for great things by the middle of his junior year.

What are you talking about NC's for? lets focus on winning a big 10 road game this season.
  • jdagg · 2 months ago
dude this is IU. we think about winning championships. thats what we do. this isnt a purdue website.
  • BobbyDigital · 2 months ago
Of course we think about them. I also think about drinking champagne in a hottub with Jessica Alba. We are coming off a 6-25 season and our best players haven't played a college game. This program is nowhere near ready to start NC conversations. Mcnuttslut (nice) is right....
  • jgongora86 · 2 months ago
Sorry guys but I disagree. We are Indiana and we do talk National championships. When you settle for less then you really don't think much about your program. Don't get me wrong if we don't win one, I realize it's not the end of world but that should always be our goal. When I see hulls, Bawa and the rest of this young squad I want to project when they will contend and have a good shot at winning it all. I know thats what they strive for and so should we. I think as a whole IU fans are good about talking about the possibilities and yet realize that our athletes should be respected no matter what the outcome ( thats why we still love hoosiers like D.J. White and A.J. Moye). As long as we are not jerks like kentucky or purdue fans I will continue to talk about the possibilities.

Listen, Bawa is no farther along than Tijan Jobe was at this point last year. He's far from contributing on a NC contending team.
  • jgongora86 · 2 months ago
Tijan was a junior in college, and bawa is a freshman. Plus I've seen this kid play in high school and he is ten times more athletic than Jobe ( no offense Jobe). This kid will contribute and will be a force if he wants to be.
  • Outoftheloop · 2 months ago
What is your basis for saying this now? I don't think that Bawa has been part of a team practice yet. Has the NCAA even cleared him yet?
  • Hardwood83 · 2 months ago
Redshirt for Roth, IMO. I hope Muniru contributes too, and believe he'll need to for IU to take the next step next year and compete for Big 10 titles. I'll add my vote for only taking KI this year, too.
  • Julian · 2 months ago
I know what your thinking about Roth because i like the kid too, but if we did then we would lose 7 guys after one season. Also if we did he wouldnt get anymore playing time than he would now, if anything he would probably lose some with incoming studs....But Hardwood83 i do strongly agree with you on just get KI this year

We should name the source of this report "Deep Hoops" and make sure their identity remains secret. That way we can keep getting these excellent posts. Very good stuff indeed.

I like it that Hulls looks good 'cause we sure need players that can handle the ball and make their teammates better. A front line of Elston, Pritchard and Watford on the floor together might be interesting. It will be cool to see how things develop.

FWIW and Off point of this post but I ran into Pat Knight at Saratoga Horse Track last Friday and asked him about dad returning to IU for the HoF award. He says we are not talking to media but he was optimistic dad would make it. He says the key will be Steve Downing........i think I would now change my vote
  • Alex · 2 months ago
Did you tell him you weren't media?
  • JerryCT · 2 months ago
I specifically asked him if he followed ITH and told him I am religious about it and that it was the best IU site there was. That is when he said they were not going to talk to media. I guess he lumps you in there with media. He was very approachable and gracious however.

He specifically said he was optimistic and it meant alot to his dad that Steve Downing was involved. He also made it clear that his view ( ie Pat's ) was that dad would like to "get it done".

I suppose none of us can actually know what it is like to be in RMK's shoes when it comes to this .
  • JerryCT · 2 months ago
I guess he could have mistakenly thought I was "media" trying to get a story. At Saratoga there were in fact alot of sports media around due to the Travers Stakes eg J Tessitore and Kenny Mayne were in the stands as Pat was having a beer.

I don't see how redshirting Roth would help either his game or the scholly situation. He simply must develop his game and I think he can do it...........but I agree that minutes from him may be tough until he does
  • mcnuttslut · 2 months ago
Judging by this post do you think we can see similar contributions this season from Elston that we saw from Pritchard last year?
  • Spencer_D · 2 months ago
Any more notes on Capo (other than he'll have to be fighting for playing time)?
  • mikejones67 · 2 months ago
Roth would be perfect in a system that had a dominate big man that could command a double team. He is one of the best shooters you will ever see. That being said he can't create his own shot. He can't utilize a screen and roll play because of his speed, ball handling, and lack of driving ability.

I would like to talk about the Teague situation. I'm not sure why he didn't show but when your father states that you plan on being at the camp and you don't show then that is cause for concern. I heard 2 rumors, 1. Eric Gordan only came because Teague was suppose to be there
    2. Teague was told by Pitino that if he attended there was a good chance they would start to recruit over him. Pitino needs a HUGE commitment in order to show face that he is still one of the top recruiters of our generation. Coach Cal's loss of another final four was overshadowed by Pitino's "indiscretions".

Granted I'm an IU fan but Teague would have a much better career at IU than U of L. Coach Crean will bring his style (when he gets the players) to the Big Ten. Even though U of L runs up and down a little more the NBA is nothing but screen and roles and dribble handoffs. IU runs this better than anyone. Plus you factor in that IU is the school in this state and U of L is still the "Little Brother" Teague will be a much bigger star in Indiana than he will KY.

Interesting take on Pitino and Teague, but I have to think Teague is the one in the driver's seat. Louisville is nowhere in the discussion for superstar PGs outside of Teague. To think Pimpino (thank you, Jason Whitlock) would recruit over Teague is a little far-fetched.

Roth will get on the court early in each of the non-conference games. If he is aggressive in moving without the ball, using screens, taking his shot in rhythm, and hits 2/3 or better, he will get plenty of time. If he is hesitant, unsure and hits 0/3, he will be done. If he is average and hits 1/3 he will play only if we have to have 3's to catch up. It is up to him now. He is no longer a freshman. But we now have the PG's to distribute and the talent to drive and command double teams, so he should get some good shots.
