Inside the Hall: Sampson talks 2008 recruiting class

I like the fact that he didnt name Eric Gordon as a returning player next year. I mean it was all but certain anyways he would declare for the draft but that just about sealed the deal right there.

    I noticed that as well.

I also noticed the Roth to Humphrey comparison, which is exactly the same thing Dave Telep of Scout.com said when I asked him about Matt Roth.

And finally, his last quote on Holloway makes a reference to the Bud Mackey situation.

It's strange reallly. All this time we keep talking about how we want Indiana kids to stay at our program, but in the end I would not be surprised if a New Yorker restores us back to greatness. I think Ebanks has a lot of heart and I strongly believe he will stay for two years. With what I predict will be an awesome 09 class I really do think we will be a strong favorite to win a national championship by 09. To me it does not matter where you come from, if you have the heart like these kids do, you are always welcome to play at Indiana.

I applaud Roth, Pritchard, Ebanks, and Holloway for sticking with their commitment to IU. That tells me a lot about their character glad to have them be a part of Indiana Basketball.

I got to thinking about K Jones comment to WV. First of all, if a Kid does not want to come to IU then I don't want him anyway. Same goes for Zeller. Secondly, I think that we are alrady stacked at the 6'8" position. It would have been nice to have Jones but Ebanks, Pritchard and Elston are all 6'8" and when you add DeAndre back into the mix that's four guys. I think IU is better off with a big ole 6'10 or 6'11 true center.

jaime, I agree with your predictions. It's always nice to keep the Indiana kids but the fact is that there is talent all over. Indiana never has gotten every kid from Indiana nor will they. But I think we may have a better chance at greatness this year then next. Gordon is one of those kids that can take a team to the final game, as long as he has the help. We know we can score...just wait until KS gets these kids 100% on D.
    Go IU

Choosing to play for Huggy Bear?

    Why?

    Why?

I noticed the non mention of EJ...I want Indiana kids but only if they want IU. I often read a lot of post on here talking about we really don't have any big guys and I still don't over look Eli Holman and how I think he will continue to grow physically into those arms but also as a player. I like what KS said about Ebanks being a bball player which is good. I have been a huge fan of Roth via youtube and he does have a swagger similar to the "redhead" Tommy C!

On a side note....I often hear people saying EJ will have to play poing in the NBA...isn't he the same size as DWade and the same type of athlete...Wade isn't a poing guard.

Any player that chooses to play for Huggins instead of IU is probably not somebody we want in an IU uniform anyway. Clearly, Ebanks was IU's #1 target at that position and the Hoosiers landed him. Jones would have been icing on the cake.

Overall, I think this is a very nice recruiting class. IU landed a nice variety of positions and I like that they have a top 5-star player along with some hard-working 3-star guys that will likely improve year after year. Those type of guys can be invaluable by the time they are juniors and seniors. If IU can keep stacking top-20 or higher classes together year after year, we will be back to a mainstay in the Top 10. Go Hoosiers!

Where is all the righteousness coming from in these comments about Jones and Huggins? I really don't think Hoosier fans are in a very strong position to be laying down judgment on coaches. Huggins is a great basketball coach, his UC teams were always very good, one year at Kstate got that team into the top 25, and he's going to just keep rolling now at his alma mater West Virginia. Adding K Jones to his team is going to help with that. There is no reason to be bitter about it, leave that for the illannoy fans.

hoosier hound, i made a comment the other day on huggins as well. i just see the guy as a dirty coach looking to recruit thugs with no regards to academics...or class for that matter. he is not the only coach you could label as such, but he seems to be near the top of that list in my eyes. but you are right, i should keep those types of comments to myself.

by the way, making phone calls is completely different from recruiting criminals with attitudes on and off the court...so please, don't compare sampson to huggins.

however, from what i have heard about jones, it seems as though huggins landed a good-character recruit for this class, so i'll leave the remarks about huggins to myself for now on.

I'm glad that others say that he kept not mentioning Eric Gordon - really odd.

The thing I like most about this class other than its talent and its variety is the fact that three of the four members are four year players. With the exception of Ebanks, I truly believe that the others will be able to help this IU program for 4 years. So much is made of landing the big time, 5 star recruits (1-2 year players) that we sometimes lose sight of the long term goal, which is to build and maintain a championship caliber program.

    Illinois' one signing yesterday

"I'm going to get good coaching, and I'll be able to play right away. And they have the things to help me succeed in my major, forest management."

    -Illinois basketball recruit, Stan Simpson

Glad to know the forest management program at Illinois is drawing kids to their program...
