Inside the Hall: Roth solid with commitment to Indiana

  • Jerry · 1 year ago
    I love him already.
  • h09sier · 1 year ago
    yessssss
  • mark · 1 year ago
This is the type of kid I want. Someone who wants to be at IU for the right reasons and most likely a 4 year player. Go IU!! We look forward to seeing you in cream and crimson next season Matt!!
  • BEDUB · 1 year ago
    absolutley
  • Jerry · 1 year ago
What is the story now w Pritchard ? I wonder what the rules are on recruits talking to recruits . Do Ebanks and Holloway know Roth & Pritchard ?

I am not sure but a comitted recruit could be considered an "agent" of IU and thus any contact is counted as a "call" ............and of course we have used our alottment up on these guys
  • Matt J. · 1 year ago
Nope, they are simply recruits. They are allowed to text, call, and talk to one another as many times as they want a day. There are no rules about recruits talking to other recruited (and signed) players.
  • ALH_00 · 1 year ago
ND's early football signees were in constant contact with one another throughout the season. Certain people developed into psuedo-program contacts and may be one reason why nearly the entire class stuck together despite ND's dismal performance on the field. So, with that precedent, I would say that IU's current b-ball recruits can (and should) be banding together and continuing to "recruit" each other, if for nothing else that to begin developing a relationship prior to becoming teammates.
  • Tom Coverdale IU Hero · 1 year ago
Finally some good news.....something is telling me ebanks is going to be wearing the candystriped pants next year but dont yell at me if im wrong matt roth will be a solid player in his career at IU maybe the next KYLE HORNSBY????????
  • Tom Coverdale IU Hero · 1 year ago
Maybe Hornsby with a little more talent
  • SocksShortsSwish · 1 year ago
Roth looks a lot more athletic than Hornsby.
  • Jerry · 1 year ago
I just found a 2006 video of Roth on Midstatehoops.com. I could not conclude anything from that and especially whether he is better than Kyle Hornsby, Dane FIfe, AJ Moye ....................should I name more ?
  • mini · 1 year ago
    Pritchard is going to bolt
  • CoveyDale · 1 year ago
to where, Kent State? Miami of Ohio?

IU is the only big boy willing to take a flier on him. He'd be delusional to leave.
  • kelin · 1 year ago
This is why I love matt roth and could care less what his "star" rating is......5star is nice...but committment to the front of the jersey is better.....

My gut tells me Ebanks may still stay....the coach is gone, the opportunity to play is there, and there is not a fanbase out there that loves basketball more (bias me). Ebanks can't sign til April, IU will have a coach by then in which they will ask him to speak to first......I know he is visiting soon with mom so it could happen.

Despite who the coach will be, IU needs to take back the model and plan it set years ago that PU and Butler are using, keep Indiana kids in Indiana, get kids to play a role and play for the name on the front....and screw the back of the jersey
  • tberry · 1 year ago
We still will not know what the fall out- from the NCAA will be. The very best will want to know that before commiting.
  • kelin · 1 year ago
Pritchard is staying put........no doubt.....he could play immediately at IU, and I think his other choices were lower D1 schools......
  • Jerry · 1 year ago
IU announced they would have closure on KS in a week , that was of course before the season was over. That to me was really dumb.

    BUT

What do you guys think of IU setting a "leaked to the media" timetable for announcing a new coach or a at least announcing a short list. This may cause a "double clutch" by recruits as their curiosity grabs ahold.

Lets face it. The new coach is going to come immediately with alot of PR and excitement..........unless ..............its a no name.
  • Ben · 1 year ago
    Rick Pitino!
  • Jerry · 1 year ago
He is too big into horse racing to leave the KY area
  • Matt J. · 1 year ago
    And really bad suits.
  • CoveyDale · 1 year ago
but maybe he doesn't feel like always being second-fiddle to UK...
  • kelin · 1 year ago
Did I miss something about IU's coaching timetable?
  • Jerry · 1 year ago
    No you didn't.

I am just saying as a strategy for delaying a recruit's decision to go somewhere else IU should announce or leak a timetable they can live with about when a new coach or a short list will be communicated. Then the guys may wait to find out.

As it is rightnow the uncertainty has got to be killing them and they are under pressure to renounce IU before a new coach is named
  • Ben · 1 year ago
    RICK PITINO!
  • Ben · 1 year ago
He is 56. He has ten years in him. He has proven he can win. He coaches at louisville.....so that almost cancels out coaching Kentucky. He can save our recruits. Build us a program that can become a powerhouse and leave it in good shape to a new coach. I think being at Louisville is killing his chances of winning an NCAA championship. He needs to be at a place like IU wich is similar to the prestige of Kentucky. This is our man for now. This is who a majority of people think should take over the program and why they shouldn't:

Bennett: Too young...not enough experience, plus his dream job is wisconson

Keno Davis: Too young....not enough experience

Calapari: Come on....wouldn't fit in with IU...we follow the rules

Anthony Grant: Come on guys.....he isn't proven enough for IU

Alford: I don't think this is a road we need to go down

Peal: Let that freak show keep tennessee....plus following rules questionable

Barns: Doesn't do that much with his talent

    Brownell: Come on.....
  • Ben · 1 year ago
I say get Pitino........quick save on the program....let him run for 8-12 years and be a little more patient for our next young experienced (more than 2 or 3 years) up and comming coach...that will inheirt a program that isn't in dismay
  • SocksShortsSwish · 1 year ago
Who do you think we should get again?
  • Ben · 1 year ago
    Rick Pitino!
  • hoosierboy812 · 1 year ago
the ville is building a new downtown arena all because of ricky p he isnt going anywhere.more like his son richard pitino.pitino runs the city hes the reason they dont have an nba team
  • Kirk Haston · 1 year ago
Its impossible to say that Barnes hasn't done much with his talent... Look at his team this year. He loses the POY last year and has been a top 10 team all year. Yeah DJ Augustin was a McDonald's All-American but he was overshadowed by Durant last year. If you look at guys on UT, Connor Atchley was the laughing stock of Texas basketball when he came in freshman year. Now they're talking about him playing in the NBA after his senior season next year. He devlops players as good as any coach in the country in my opinion. Yeah he hasn't won the "big one" but he recruits great talkent that leaves after 1 or 2 years and he recruits mediocre talent and develops them into great college basketball players. He's proven this as Texas has been a top 25 team for the past 10 years since he's been in Austin.
  • BrianK · 1 year ago
Lol your knocking those other coaches for being too oung and not enough experience but remember Kentucky picked up Pitino as a young up and comer. Pitino is too imbedded in Louisville. Being at Louisville is not killing his chances of winning a championship, they have won a couple and just went to final four a couple years ago. His team this year has a good shot. We need to get a younger up and comer who is gonna be here awhile
  • Matt J. · 1 year ago
There was another traditional team that once took a chance on an up and comer from Army who built the program into a national powerhouse and won three championshps with that coach from Army.

Take your pick: Indiana or Duke. That's a pretty good track record with "young up and coming talent" that you've so decidedly and ignorantly panned.
  • BEDUB · 1 year ago
Ben , I live in Louisville and know for a fact that it would be next to impossible to get him out of there . For one his WIFE absolutely loves Louisville and the state . Two he is into the horse biz . Three he told Jim Rome that he was going to coach for another 5 years and hang it up.He also has a great relationship with ad Tom jurich , who happened to be atheletic director of the year last year.(jurich also turned us down before we got Greenspan)
  • jdaddy · 1 year ago
This guy (Roth) is gonna be a surprise! Simply for the fact that he believes in IU tradition. He will be a below average big ten player the first couple years and then he will turn into a Tommy Cover.. type player. I am pleased for sure... not real sure about Ebanks but, It's IU. We shall see, it's been rocky but I think we will rebound. 20008-09 Recruits Roth/ Pritchard/ JC PLayer? Ebanks ? Thoughts????
  • BTOWN40 · 1 year ago
The Indy Star reported that Eric Gordon will only wear a wrist brace the rest of the season, one that doesn't cover any part of the hand....Lets see if this helps with his ball handling and shooting, thus cutting down on his turnovers.
  • kelin · 1 year ago
Rick Pitino would be HORRIBLE hir for IU....He would be gone in 3-5 years back to the NBA...(Lakers) and IU would be stuck right back in the position they don't want...LOOKING For another coach.

Greeny would be roasted if he hires Pitino.....
  • Jerry · 1 year ago
Agreed. Pitino ? He is a hardcore BIG EAST guy over his entire career, his hobby is horse racing and he is havign basketball success...............so why come to IU ? All his money is tied up in horses but he wants a new challenge ?

    phFFFFFFtt

If you want to add an additional coach not often mentioned here add Paul Hewitt or Leonard Hamilton at least. Not my favorites but who knows.

In the BIG EAST the only coach who is proven, youngish, and maybe willing to take on the B10 is Jay Wright who I would love to see at IU. Keep in mind he had to clean up Nova from NCAA violations as well.
  • Matt J. · 1 year ago
Why are you so enamored with underperforming and lousy ACC couches? Crap, let's get Seth Greenberg. He just won ACC coach of the year TWICE!
  • CoveyDale · 1 year ago
Leonard Hamilton...? I sincerely hope you're joking. The chair I'm sitting in right now would be a better option at head coach than Hamilton.

As for Jay Wright, he cleaned up his own mess at Nova. The phone card scandal was under his watch.
  • Jerry · 1 year ago
    Of course I am joking.

I was commenting on Ben's "Pitino" chant and offering other bottom of the barrel choices ..........glad to see you guys know the bottom of the barrel when you see it.

During the NCAA mess w KS I reviewed all the listed sanctions on the NCAA website. I saw Majerus etc and a Nova sanction in early 2000's but nothing on Wright. The Nova isssue was for bringing recruits to the NBA locker room and introducing to coaches and players of the '76ers. I could have missed something however.
  • Matt J. · 1 year ago
Thank goodness. I was about to be offended that you didn't invite the rest of us to your kegger.
  • CoveyDale · 1 year ago
you might have missed it because there were no actual NCAA penalities.

half the team was suspended for their part in a phone card scandal in 2003. im sketchy on the details but i think it was kind of an oblivious move by wright. the reason why im against hiring him is because IU needs to go with someone that is the squeakiest of squeaky clean.

i dont even want a head coach that has had a parking ticket before, much less an actual scandal.
  • BrianK · 1 year ago
Lol Pitino isn't going back to the NBA especially after he turns 60. But agreed wrong coach for us
  • BEDUB · 1 year ago
Greeny needs to be roasted now
  • Matt J. · 1 year ago
If he's in love with the history and tradition of the game and a place like Indiana, he's already a fan favorite in my household.

That, and he has a pretty damned fine first name, too.
  • hoosierboy812 · 1 year ago
new albany bulldogs two wins away from a state title!!!!!!!!!!!whats up baby!!!!!!!! go dawgs!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Kirk Haston · 1 year ago
Branch McCracken for next IU coach!
  • Jerry · 1 year ago
    Wouldn't that be heaven ! ?
  • jgongora · 1 year ago
McCraken was a racist. Good coach, but he also lost us players like oscar robertson who could have given ucla a run for their money. Bottomline, each of our coaches had major problems.
  • Sherron Wilkerson · 1 year ago
SO he says that HIS recruitment was totally done the right way, hmmmm, something sounds a little fishy here. Fuck the NCAA for lying about our coach
  • BEDUB · 1 year ago
I think Roth is the kind of kid that was coming even you were the coach , Sampson didnt have to burn to many minutes with Roth.
  • Ben · 1 year ago
BOB KNIGHT WAS AT THE ARMY FOR 5 YEARS AS A HEAD COACH BEFORE COMMING TO INDIANA

COACH K WAS AT THE ARMY FOR YEARS

BENNET HASN'T EVEN BEEN A HEAD COACH FOR TWO YEARS

GRANT HASN'T EVERN BEEN A HEAD COACH FOR TWO YEARS
  • Ben · 1 year ago
COACH K WAS 5 YEARS AS WELL
  • Ben · 1 year ago
I'M NOT AGAINST AN UP AND COMMING COACH....I JUST DON'T THINK THAT HE IS OUT THERE RIGHT NOW...PITINO COULD KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING UNTIL WE FIND THE RIGHT GUY
  • Ben · 1 year ago
PITINO HAD ELEVEN YEARS PRIOR BEFORE BECOMING KY'S COACH
  • tberry · 1 year ago
IU will have to settle for and up and coming coach (years of rebuilding) unless they become willing to put out some really Big Bucks (shorter rebuilding).

Which will it be? IU has always gone cheap and I predict that is what they will do this time.
  • ray · 1 year ago
THANK YOU MATT ROTH...YOU WON'T REGRET YOUR DECISION...IU FANS WILL LOVE AND ADORE YOU!!!

yes!!!!! very good news! can't wait to see this kid playing for a program, and not simply for a coach. we'll see a lot of heart from this kid and he'll wear the uniform with a sense of pride.

    youtube matt roth folks...
