Inside the Hall: Report: Negedu LOI decision coming today

  • hoosier07 · 1 year ago
If we get Negedu, Sutton probably wouldn't come to IU anyways. Let's hope Matt Roth and him are good friends so he has a little peer pressure!
  • CoveyDale · 1 year ago
i don't think that Negedu's decision is going to affect Sutton at all. Negedu is more of a scoring 4, while Sutton is a true post (6'10) and would play at the 5.

both would see major minutes right away with the lack of frontcourt depth returning.
  • hoosier07 · 1 year ago
very good point. now let's hope we get them both!
  • Hoosiergirl · 1 year ago
This IS getting interesting! Any-word on Sutton?
  • Alex · 1 year ago
    Basketblog says he's announcing tomorrow.
  • BGleas · 1 year ago
What are the scholarship numbers? Probably getting a little ahead of myself, but do we want both this guy and Sutton or is it really one or the other.
  • tacojohn · 1 year ago
We would have 10 of a permissible 12 for 2008-2009. We would have 12 of a permissible 13 locked up for 2009-2010. However, you can't really do anything with that extra one until you find out what the NCAA is going to do, and I think the most likely and appropriate penalty would be to extend that loss of a scholarship another year. That would mean we would be done for 2009 if both Negedu and Sutton come.
  • Alex · 1 year ago
Thanks John for that piece of analysis.
  • BGleas · 1 year ago
What does everyone think? If that's the case for scholarships, then I think if both Negedu and Sutton wanted to come I would take Negedu and then leave one available for next year.

I know we need size, but even though he's only 6-6 Negedu is a power forward, and I kind of equate us a an NBA lottery team right now. We need talent above anything else, so take the best available talent and then figure it out later. I think we could get more ready talent then Sutton by holding the extra scholarship until next year.
  • Disco_Briscoe · 1 year ago
I hope we get Negedu but I think its going to be the first one to accept.

That gives us one more to use? And next season we'll have just Taber's to use and maybe this spare for sure?
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
    09

    crawford creek negedu eltson sutton

this could be a good start...decent height with a 6-4 shooting gaurd....and the fron court is 6-7 - 6-10....not too mention the depth
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
weather we get sutton or not we need to use the last two on big men...centers perferably
  • Disco_Briscoe · 1 year ago
So...I take it you don't like Jones or Williams...they should be starting '09 at the point and wing with Crawford at 2. This is going to be 3 guard line up with Creek probably the 4th.

You think pretty high of Sutton putting him in your next year's starting 5...what's going to make Sutton any better than lets say...George Leach?
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
I loved AJ Moye......but maybe you don't remember how things woked out with a 6'3 power forward.....it didn't go well. A 4 gaurd offense will not win the Big Ten. If it has then please inform me on wich team and wich year did it. I like Jones and I like Williams. I could see Jones and Crawford in the backcourt that is a realistic choice and a solid backcourt. I think when your tallest player on the roster is 6-10 you almost have to put him at center. Plus the way things are going, if we land Sutton, it looks like the other scholarships could go to more gaurds and possibly wings. If we have solid players in 4 spots I'm not sure Sutton would have to be any better than George Leach to win. Maybe we should just have a 5 gaurd offense. I'm sure that would give us a chance to compete nationally. Even northwestern has a 7-0 center.
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
Plus....either way weather its jones, crawford, williams, negedu, creek, roth or dumes....I see it as great depth and they should all provide quality minutes. Quality depth will be a key. Rotating quality talent will give us 40 minutes of quality basketball that will make it hard for teams without depth to compete against. Actually I'd like to see Taber's scholly used on a great center. With a great true center, Sutton, and Pritchard that would give us quality depth in the front court. Not to mention Sutton and Pritchard could rotate at the 4 with Eltson and Capo.
  • Disco_Briscoe · 1 year ago
    Negedu is a 4 (pf) not a 3 (sf).
  • BobbyDigital · 1 year ago
Long time reader, first time poster....

I think Disco was talking about a 3 guard lineup with Creek being the odd man out rather than playing power forward.

I talked to Sutton on facebook recently. Obviously he wasn't going to tell me anything he didn't want all over the internet, but he is a big city guy and it wouldn't surprise me a bit to see him end up in Philly. Just my feeling though. He really does seem like a genuinely nice person. I guess a lot of questions will be answered tomorrow.
  • Alex · 1 year ago
Welcome. However, I would caution you against contacting potential recruits. That's the best way to get contacted by the compliance department, especially if you are a student or a donor at the university. Just a heads up.
  • Disco_Briscoe · 1 year ago
Yes I was saying Creek as the 4th guard, not playing the 4. I'm not sure how much college basketball you watch but how many 6'11''+ big men are out there and how many are really any good? Tabeet? He's not even that good. Two athletic 6'8'' guys do just fine (DJ White).
  • hoosierfan27 · 1 year ago
Williams and Verdell should definitely start in 09. Creek will only be a freshman in 09 and I don't see him starting over Williams.
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
well we will see what happens I guess...non of them have even stepped on the floor yet....anybody read the hoosier insider? It says negedu wanted to play for arizona because an assistant coach was there he liked. Now that assistant coach is at memphis. With memphis losing out on Ebanks to west virgina this could be trouble for IU.
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
college basketball is a very evil world
  • h09sier · 1 year ago
    http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/daily/breakingnews...

arizona just released him. i was able to read this once, but now it says i need to register to read it. if you have trouble, maybe try going to their main page and finding it under the breaking news section
  • cojames · 1 year ago
Good stuff neal, I was able to read it now problem. Well looks like its time for Coach Crean to get busy, I hope we can land this kid.
  • HoosierSmitty · 1 year ago
What kind of kid is this player? I just wonder given what has transpired between Arizona and him.
  • Disco_Briscoe · 1 year ago
This isn't a red flag. Kids pick a school for playing time and a chance to grow/win but they also pick a school because they are comfortable and have a good relationship with the person who recruited them. If that person is no longer there then there is no problem with leaving. As stated before, Zona lost the asst that recruited him and he doesnt know when Lute will jump ship like he did this past year. What do you think about Williams leaving Marq for Crean?
  • Alex · 1 year ago
Absolute beast at the 4-spot from what I've heard and seen on video.
  • HoosierSmitty · 1 year ago
So they essentially "Negadu"d his letter of intent? Get it...right?...no laughter? You know like negated....still nothing?

Ok it's been a long year...5 more days of school.

Maybe we'll pull this guy..if he's worthy of wearing an IU uniform...
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
negedu wanted to play for arizona because an assistant coach was there he liked. Now that assistant coach is at memphis. With memphis losing out on Ebanks to west virgina this could be trouble for IU.
  • cooper · 1 year ago
I'd say his top choice is Memphis since the reason he is leaving is the Assistant Coach left Arizona for Memphis and Memphis has a spot since Ebanks picked WVU. It would be a great pull though
  • JerryCT · 1 year ago
I hope we get both kids because :

    1. Winning some games next year helps recruiting for the future
    2. Sutton in Yr #2 will be better than any freshman in year #1 if Crean is as good at developing players as hoped
    3. Never know who gets hurt ( ie Elston ) or loses his way ( ie Ellis, Bassett ) or goes pro ( ie Crawford )

I still donot see why folks are so high on Creek. His team had 3 guys going to MD, UVA, U fo Wash and still lost 16 games many by double digits. What are you looking at ............I have not found it ..............and I live in CT.
  • BGleas · 1 year ago
Loved that the first minute and a half of his three minute highlight reel on YouTube was all defensive plays.
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
the timing and assistant coach at memphis...has got me depressed about this
  • BGleas · 1 year ago
No need to be depressed about this. Landing this guy is like finding money on the street. Yeah it's awesome if it happens, but it's not like you're expecting it or even banking on it.

Probably not the best analogy, but hey, what do you want from me:)
  • BobbyDigital · 1 year ago
I've read that the assistant in question is interested in returning to Arizona at some point and definitely doesn't want to burn that bridge. IIRC he eluded to the fact that he wouldn't go after Arizona's kids. Then again I've heard coaches say lots of stuff.
  • h09sier · 1 year ago
I think the assistant coach leaving for Memphis has something to do with Negedu asking out of the LOI, don't get me wrong. BUT from his comments, it seems like he isn't happy with the fact that Lute Olson can just leave and come back when he feels like it. There's more to the situation, I'm sure, but that somewhat unpredictable future made him uncomfortable. He (Negedu) also mentioned that UA told him everyone had fun, everyone loved it, but when he visited everyone looked unhappy. He probably felt he was misled. I think those things, along with the assistant leaving, contributed to his departure. All of that being said, don't just assume he'll follow the guy to Memphis. I think we have a decent shot. He'd be a star here, he'd get loads of playing time, and TONS of exposure. Cross your fingers
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
"There have been so many changes that I feel they've lied to me all along about the situation," Negedu said. "Everything has changed a lot since I've signed down there. I can't take it no more. Before I signed with Arizona they said it was fun, the players loved it and everything," he said. "But when I took my official visit no one seemed happy. Everything changed. Lute Olson left, taking a break. No one (knew) where he went.

Peegs is reporting that 7-0 JUCO center Tijan Jobe has signed with Indiana. Never heard of this guy.
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
    sweet
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
what a rollercoaster........thank god we have size
  • BGleas · 1 year ago
I have no idea if this guy is good, but for arguments sake let's say he equal to Sutton but with two year of JUCO, then I'd take him.

It would just split up the scholarships a little since he'd be a junior, instead of adding Sutton and having so many scholarships in '08 and '09.

    Still want Negedu though.
  • cojames · 1 year ago
Here is a little bit I've found on him, not much though:

Tijan Jobe: (SO) 7-foot-0 (265) from Gambia, Africa.

played at Olney Central College (Juco) where he avg. 3.0 ppg and 3.0 rpg and about 7.0 min per game

"Tijan is as physically imposing as any player I have ever had here at OCC. Tijan has really improved on the offensive end, but right now his defense and rebounding is ahead of his offensive game," said Burris. "Tijan runs the floor very well and he will see a lot of minutes for us this coming season."
  • woodpecker · 1 year ago
I agree with you I would rather have a project for 2 years instead of 4!!

come on Negedu, Bloomington is wonderfull place!
  • BGleas · 1 year ago
Agree, assuming this guy is serviceable, then I'd rather have him than Sutton, and adding Negedu would then solidify the front court, yet losing Jobe in two years would open up a scholly for when Crean really has this thing up and running in '11.
  • woodpecker · 1 year ago
if true thats not a good sign towards getting Sutton.
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
I like the idea of spreading the scholarships out more......I'm sure he can't be any worse than sutton....I'd just like to see a big body in the line up......and this choice would make the recruiting classes smaller....hoosier nation says that iu is in the handful of school for negedu's services....when will he make the choice?
  • jdaddy · 1 year ago
Alright guys!!!!! Here it is.... Tijan Jobe 7'0 ft about to sign!!!!!???? Jobe is from Gambia and E. Negedu is from Nigeria. ANY CONNECTIONS??!!
  • hoosier07 · 1 year ago
This could shape up to be an AMAZING 48 hours if things go the hoosiers way... I don't know about you but I have faith in Coach Crean and his ability to make someone a player -- like this 7 footer we are potentially landing...
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
maybe he is the next todd lindeman............lol.........
  • cojames · 1 year ago
Could this signing have any affect on Negedus decision, both he and Tijan Jobe are formerly from A-hope and from what I just read it is an African Hoops organization that helps young men get their education. It may be a bit of a stretch but I'm sure it doesn't hurt.
  • Ben_M · 1 year ago
might be why they signed him
  • woodpecker · 1 year ago
I thought linderman had a very nice senior year!
