Tis would be great, but I see a few problems with this. I don't think crean will offer him a scholie past 09. does anyone know if he comes from a wealthy family, it would be difficult to turn down a ride to a good school like notre dame. If he does come, I hope he has " a man on a mission type attitude" so he could learn to be a bill lambier ( ok maybe I'm pushing it). It seems like he's a good kid and of course we be an added pleasure to the Indiana family.

I think the walk-on spot would be for the first season with a scholarship the following three seasons.

Even if he's not from a wealthy family the in-state tuition at IU wouldn't destroy them--especially if, as Big A said, it's only for a year.

Sorry I mistyped, I don't think that Coach will offer a scholarship for the next three years because there a lot of big men out there for 2010,11, and 12. This is too bad, because I think we gave away too many schollies for the class of 08. Don't get me wrong they have my backing 100%, but lets face it guys we all know that this upcoming season was going to be rough. I just don't want to force these kids in the 08 class to transfer because of better guards in the 09 (creek, hulls and hopefully the other creek) class. If we didn't have such a limited number of schollies for the 2010 and 2011 class i would feel different.

I don't see Coach asking/forcing players to transfer (ala Nick Saban at Alabama...which is a creepy story if you're in the mood). He seems like a guy who wants to win the right way, based on his rhetoric and also his record at Marquette. As a fan that would like to be proud that IU is back on the "high road", I would not approve of such tactics.

I think the scholarship pinch is just going to be part of the "cost of business" with KS. It sucks, but IU should honor its commitment to its athletes (to the extent that the athletes reciprocate).

It sounds like picking up Van Tresse as a walk-on would be pretty sweet. But, if there is no room for him here, he'd be a fool to pass up ND. They are doing really well under Mike Brey, and that diploma is priceless.

I would guess that if he came as a walk-on, he would very likely get a scholarship his last one or two years. Of course, maybe I've just grown to accustomed to extreme turnover on the basketball roster where there is always extra one-year scholarships for walk-ons. But after all Suhr, Ahfeld, and Taber have all finished their careers with scholarships.

I think with all the talk about the heinous crime of letting any instate talent go elsewhere, Crean should offer SVT the last scholarship and dare the fans to criticism him for it.

Here is what I would be wrestling with if I were him. "Go to the school I "love" and I have to pay for at least one year and who have cooled on me, or go to a school that is still in state, WHERE THEY WANT ME, for practically free (I realize it is not completely free) that is not a heated rival, which also is respected academically." I think I would have to choose the free education, especially if I thought I could get along with the coach at all. I mean, if it comes down to dollars. Now if he says, "Indiana is my dream, I always wanted to go there, whether they want me or not," that is a different story. Kids make decisions for different reasons and who knows why these decisions are made, but I would struggle with that one.

ummm... I have a hard time thinking that he wouldn't consider Butler University who is also recruiting him and offered him a schollie...he would fit the system and dominate at that level...possibly to the point of getting an NBA look...

However, if he has an ND offer and no offer from IU, I would think a lot of pride would go into the decision...he is a scholarship athlete and will take one, regardless of any opportunity to walk-on...

Personally, I would ask Jeremiah Rivers to pass on the scholarship for one year (while he sits out for NCAA transfer guidelines) his family can definately afford the tuition and he would open up a spot for another quality BIG to play alongside him in the future.

Yeah shut up. He aint cumin to IU. Quit the wishful thinking and face the fact. I have reliable sources that have told me he likes the idea of getting college for FREE!

I have a hard time buying that he would walk-on at IU. This isn't the 1980s anymore and we aren't Nebraska football under Tom Osborne (He had about 30 walk-ons on most of his teams.). If I were SVT, I would run to Butler in a heartbeat. Maybe the kid doesn't want to stay in his hometown, but I think he and Matt Howard could be one hell of an inside tandem, and he would be able to play a huge amount of time for four years at a successful program that is now fully on the media's radar screen. To me, this is a no brainer for SVT, and I think none of us should get excited or hold our breaths on him coming to IU. As for ND, this kid is destined to Luke Zeller type playing time, at best, at ND. I would love to see him in an IU uniform, and would cheer like hell if we were able to pull it off with a walk-on offer, but I'm not going to be surprised if it doesn't happen.

He would be crazy to pass up a scholarship from a decent school to walk on at IU. "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."

It means a great deal to these good young players to be wanted and an offer means we want you. No offer means we really want someone else and we don't care if you come or not.

That is not necessarily true. These days, teams recruit their walk-ons before they ever enroll in school. They are often guys that don't quite justify a scholarship or fill a need when no scholarships are left, but have been on a team's radar. Most walk-ons (excluding the Adam Ahlfelds of the world) are desired players and teams care very much if they come. Now, a walk-on offer is not equal to a scholarship, but it is certainly something.
