Good, Bad and Ugly: Loyola (Md.)
Firing Kelvin Sampson would be an overreaction and a mistake, in my opinion. However, there are a lot of Indiana fans who seem to think that's what should happen. I am disappointed in the coaching staff because they knew the rules and chose not to follow them. I am also disappointed because coach Sampson said that the phone call problems were in the past and wouldn't happen at Indiana. I am glad that the university was proactive in this situation and took swift action against the coaching staff. Let's hope it doesn't happen again because I have a feeling that the outcome would be much different.
This is a black eye on IU now, given the other stuff happened at OU, and I would not be surprised if the NCAA came down on us tougher. Losing a scholarship could hurt us in getting one of the guys we really want but that is the price to pay......
Now should he be fired....I really want to say NO because I really like KS as a coach, I like what he has brought back to IU as a national power, but I don't like the "dirt under the finger nails" so to speak. So my answer is "I don't know". I can't accept the fact it has happened again and to be honest apparently there is NOTHING in place to monitor or stop these phones calls.
KS and his assistants need a pre paid phone card! or a couple of books of stamps...
Sampson has been a great change from the Mike Davis era, but he MUST GO!!!!!!
I heard a rumor that this was coming on Friday afternoon before Hoosier Hysteria, but I refused to believe it and let it drag me down during that celebration. Then to find out its true less than two days later. I feel sick right now.
The rumor I heard also said the probable punishment was the loss of two scholarship and no postseason in 08. And with how accurate the rest of the rumor was, I'm terrified that the NCAA is going to bring down that exact punishment too. Right now I'm trying to forgive this even though I don't know why. But if the NCAA puts a postseason ban on this team, Sampson should be fired.
We don't pull this crap at Indiana, period. We're not Kentucky or Illinois or Michigan or Ohio State, at least we weren't before. Now I don't know what to think. What was it, like 30-35 years since Indiana had any sort of violation, then it takes Sampson less than a year to end that streak. Only description is embarrasing.
