firing him would undoubtedly result in a lawsuit, so suspending him or buying him out seem like more likely options at this point. if we start winning though, its more likely that he stays

Why would this result in a lawsuit? I'm not being defensive, I'm really asking. I thought that there was language in his contract that said we could if something happened. I know these are just allegations but why can't we fire him for the three way calls he made. Those aren't major infractions but he did do it, after he was already on probation.

I think IU is just crossing there T's and dotting there I's so they don't get sued. Hopefully they get it right and send him pack in SOON.

The key here is trying to avoid the Jim O'Brien like lawsuit, as Katz sites. O'Brien was fired for allegations before the NCAA ruled and then won his lawsuit against Ohio State.

As the article says, McRobbie met with the trustees and legal counsel and it does appear they may just be trying to figure out the best possible way to part with "Coach" Sampson. Finally, someone is looking out for the name and well being of this University. Hopefully we can send out Greenspan too in a "package deal".

Ok, when he was hired, his contract stated that he could commit these violations again. IU hired an outside firm to investigate and it was found that he did in fact violate his probation. To me, that's enough to fire him. It also makes it different than O'Brien's situation at OSU to my understanding.

What does "game by game" mean anyway? Is he being evaluated on his performance or does that just mean that he's still our coach until we can get rid of him for the least amount of money?

I really wish Sampson would just bow out and save the university from any further embaressment that he has directly caused. The best scenario would be the Mike Davis scenario. Tender his resignation effective the end of the season thus allowing the team to finish out the season with their current head coach and eliminate any instability as to what the future holds. This would also ensure that the university does not have to go through a messy lawsuit post season which has happened in many prior cases similar to this one. Come on KS....dig deap and find an ounce of class and do the right thing.

Why would KS not resign on his own? seriously he has to know the fan base is fed up with this, he is a distraction for the team, and his Yogi's account has been revolked...Please Kelvin, how long do you expect to get residual love for getting EJ here? The audacity Kelvin when many of us (Like ME) defended you from DAY ONE...even after the 2nd wave of violations...........

I haven't heard much on Greenspan. Is his job safe at this point? I was screaming and hollering at him at our Bowl game. I am one that didn't like the Lynch hire, although from a character standpoint, he's a wonderful man. I just don't think he's the guy taking us to the next level. I was also hollering at him about Sampson getting in trouble again. Of course, a few drinks may have influenced my judgment.

You're the Illinois fan right? Coming from a school that reps Webber who recently said something to the effect of, "I thought the crowd was awesome tonight" even after his own player took a cheap shot on EJ as well as fans throwing objects at EJ's family. Brilliant!

You know, I don't mind rival fans jumping over here for banter. In fact, I recently did the same over at the Buckeye blog. But Kurt, your credibility is null at this point. Thanks for trying.

unfortunately.....we have not seen that, and so many of us have defended this man so many times through his short tenure here at IU. It is now time to return the favor and allow the Hoosiers to regain what little amount of dignity that we have left. Resign effective the end of the season and then allow IU to choose whether or not he is still fit to remain the coach til the end of this year.

If you are CEO of a company and the IRS is investigating your company for tax problems
you pretty much know if you have a problem. Trying to cover it up or lie to the IRS is NOT
your answer because if they catch you it will be ugly. You need to come clean,tell the truth
and cut your loses. It is hard for me to believe that the President and Athletic Director do
not know if Sampson is guilty. They know or they are complete idiots! So the answer
should be easy. Option#1 Fire him if he lied. Option#2 Defend him if he didn't. Now I guess there could be things that the NCAA found that IU did not, if so, do Option#3 and
suspend him until IU can investigate the new info. Once that is done go to Option # 1
or #2. Failure for IU to make a clear cut direction in this matter just adds to the black
mark if Sampson is guilty and we lose faith in our college's ability to reason properly.
Letting him coach on a game by game basis is just stupid!

They can't suspend him because of allegations they would get in trouble for that one. But as I understand because of the wording of his contract tehy could fire him. which I think they should to lessen the black eye
