Inside the Hall: Hoosiers lose nailbiter at home against Badgers

it's the middle of february and we still haven't beaten a ranked team. disappointing.

Did DJ get cooties at halftime? Smallpox? AIDS? After the way he came out dominating and playing with a vengeance, he barely touches the ball in the second half. Bassett, Gordon, Crawford and Ellis have got to get the big guy touches, because if they do, he'll put them on his shoulders and carry them to victory. Alas, we couldn't buy a 3-ball and Wisconsin seemingly couldn't miss one. Plus, Bassett had what may be his first ever poor free-throw shooting night.

It may be the sanctions violations clouding my judgment but can someone explain to me why IU (Coach Sampson) did not call one of its remaining timeouts after clearing halfcourt in the last few seconds? With one of the most prolific outside shooters in the college game this year, I cannot imagine that an experienced, game-smart coach does not have the ability to draw up a play that either exploits Gordon's ability or uses it as a decoy to develop an open shot with the available time on the clock. It is difficult for those of us who have been following IU for more than thirty years to stomach the defense that allows a team to shoot 11 of 26 from behind the arc but I am more disgusted by the fact that when a game is on the line we resort to whomever has the ball shoots for the win. The men played well and I'll be the first to say that we should not criticize the team for its efforts - that were noteworthy nearly all night. However, advancing in the tournament requires a team (on both ends of the court) not five individuals. Am I the only person dreading the ESPN attention on Saturday and another difficult opponent?

    Semper Fidelis,

Amen. 4.5 seconds on the clock. 2 timeouts available. We throw to Ellis to launch a 3. Hopefully Greenspan will fire him tomorrow.

I'll co-sign this. I've wondered many times this season if Sampson is receiving a bonus for timeouts not used. His bench coaching has been poor all year, and the failure to use a timeout in light of the team's track record this year in similar situations was pathetic. We were just rocked by a three pointer and lost the lead, and he lets them play on.

I'm with you. Also, I think he should have abandoned the zone earlier.

Where the refs as bad as they looked?

I hate to blame the refs but there were some very questionable calls from what I could see. I was in the stands though so it always looks different, so from the people that saw it on TV, was this the case?
  • Kevin · 1 year ago
I spelled were wrong, I'm so flustered right now.

We gave up so many weak-side boards it was disgusting, so frustrating to watch down the stretch.

refs were bad, but our defensive rebounding and free throw shooting were worse, so im not even going there. we had our chances to put the game out of reach, but didn't. the missed travel call late was bad, but it should not have come to that. hard to justify blaming the refs in my opinion

we HAVE to win these next two games. think about if we lose the next two games and then lose at msu. does our profile merit a tournament birth? i don't think so

that said, this was the best game gordon has played in a while. his outside shot didn't fall, but he did not turn the ball over much and he drove with control.

must win this weekend. must win

i just read somewhere that a fan was wearing a "bring bobby back" shirt and was told to change or leave. is this true? if so, that's ridiculous. i'm really disliking the administration right now.
  • deedubbadoo · 1 year ago
That was in the Indy Star article:

"...And to think, while a corrupt coach was leading IU onto the floor to play Wisconsin, Assembly Hall security had nothing better to do than force a fan to take off a shirt reading "Bring Back Bobby." He was asked to remove it twice. Twice, he put it back on.

Nice to see that freedom of speech is alive and well on our college campuses..."

Who does everyone want as the next IU coach? I haven't given it much thought, but how about Anthony Grant of VCU?
  • Mike W. · 1 year ago
I think it's only fair to compare Sampson to a lame-duck President. Yeah, he's most likely be our coach until after the season is completed but after that we should start searching. I'm thinking our "not-so" short list will include: Jay Wright (Villanova), Tom Crean (Marquette), Anthony Grant (VCU), Bruce Pearl (Tennessee), Rick Barnes (Texas), Brad Stevens (Butler), John Calipari (Memphis), Ray McCullum (IU Asst.) and NBA coaches Larry Brown, Mike Montgomery and Randy Wittman. Any other suggestions?
  • CoveyDale · 1 year ago
Barnes, Pearl and Calipari are happy where they are. Crean is a chronic underachiever that hasn't done anything outside of 2003.

I think Wittman is worth nother call.

We just played ourselves out of that win. We were obviously the better team on the floor, we just gave it away. Why did DJ not touch the ball every possession in the second half when we were shooting garbage from behind the line and he was on fire? The zone looked great at times, but then we would forget to make switches and they would bang threes. Sure the refs could have made better calls, but there is no excuse to let them outplay us down the stretch.

Not to get negative, but I considered that game the most likely of the next three for us to win. Purdue SMOKED them and we lost it on a three by a big man. Not looking good for the next 6 days.

Who is going to even want to coach this team? We'll be under sanctions, recruits are going to bail, and the program will be in turmoil. Does any coach we really want as fans, WANT to come here?

Our choices are either an unproven yet energetic young coach IF WE'RE LUCKY (IU ties or not)
Or Dakich or McCallum ...two coaches who have head coaching experience, but lackluster results.
  • Mr_C · 1 year ago
Yes, almost any coach on the market will want to come coach Basketball U.
