Inside the Hall: Hoosiers land first 2010 commitment: Jacksonville’s David Williams

  • Spencer_D · 8 months ago
I trust Crean knows what he's doing, but that does make me a bit nervous that this kid is unranked.
  • jfease · 8 months ago
Even though this a shock, I don't think Crean would have offered him if he didn't see something good. It could also be a good thing because if players really want to come to IU then this is just a message to them that they need to go ahead and decide or they might miss out.
  • student · 8 months ago
This makes me very nervous. Not only is he rated poorly, no schools have offered him a scholarship?
  • Ben Young · 8 months ago
Although I don't like signing a kid this low this early he did average 21pts and 11 boards. Lets hope he improves fast.
  • Paul · 8 months ago
UGH. Brings me back to the days of recruiting under Mike Davis.
  • BobbyDigital · 8 months ago
What is your coaching experience Paul? We don't care what you think.
  • ryan_iu · 2 months ago
hey Paul so is bringing you back to the Mike Davis recruiting days a good thing or a bad thing because i think mike davis is a hell of a recruiter just not much of a coach...
  • jgongora86 · 8 months ago
I don't care how fans try to spin it. This is just plain dumb. If he's just a two star, it would take other programs a bit more time to recognize this kids talents. If he held it he could have waited to see how the teague and ferguson situation is playing out. I'm not saying he might not be a star, but he should have played this better. I'm annoyed.
  • jgongora86 · 8 months ago
Let me add this. I don't know much about this kid and he could be a superstar, I'm just upset because coach should have waited out a bit longer.
  • Notatidiot-fan · 8 months ago
Yes and the same ones "complaining" now are the same one's clammering two years about about grabbing the Lawrence North kid who was ranked in the top 50 of that class. Where is he now? Not even on the board. You NON-Division One wantabe coachs just shut up and let the real one do his job
  • fergrad · 8 months ago
Don't really get this one. Kinda disappointed.
  • GFDave · 8 months ago
Most of us, incuding myself, have little to go on when we evaluate(?) high schoolers and their upside. All we know are how many stars they have next to their name and whose cousina have seen them play. So I want to give the largest majority of the doubt to the coaches.

Having said that this one is strange, if not for any other reason than this kid's name hasn't been mentioned on any of the boards or scouting reports most of us read. Its just a little weird. Nevertheless, I do like 6' 7" wing players.
  • Nate · 8 months ago
This is totally out of left field. Even if the guys has some mystical under-the-radar high ceiling... why offer him right now?

It makes no sense to offer scholarships at the drop of a hat. It's a no-doubt decision for a guy like this to commit within 48 hours. And so we lose a very valuable scholarship.

But I must agree with some of you... I'm not getting paid $1+ mil a year to coach, so maybe there's something I'm missing. I certainly hope that's the case...
  • JerryCT · 8 months ago
I donot fully understand the rules on recruiting and I have read the NCAA rules.

What obligations do either the player or the school have under an oral offer and commitment ?

It seems to me we offer alot of kids . Look at all the kids who say IU has "offered" . Can IU later not accept the written commitment if we get jammed up with recruits we like better ?

I am going to go with the coach on this one.

Where was Courtney Lee ranked in HS ?
  • CoveyDale · 8 months ago
    I think Lee was a 3-star.

The reason why he didn't get a lot of high-major attention is because most schools knew he was an academic risk.

To play devil's advocate, maybe the scouts just haven't seen enough tape on Williams yet. Sometimes a prospect is a default two-star (Scout) or unranked (Rivals) because he hasn't been fully evaluated yet. I'm not saying that's the case here, but it could be a possibility.
  • Bryan · 8 months ago
I'm confused, if this kid was out of nowhere, why is the lead columnist for the Courier-Journal saying that he was also being recruited by UK, South Carolina, Clemson, and Miami? Perhaps there is something to this kid, but the recruiting services just don't have enough data to rate him.
  • Alex · 8 months ago
I believe those are the schools listed on his Rivals and Scout profiles.
  • Kelin Blab · 8 months ago
Also Bryan, the recruiting services don't go out and evaluate or see many of these players, alot of them are using the same internet based information we all have and forming a 'star' opinion from there........
  • Bored_in_the_Offseason · 8 months ago
There is sure a lot of complaining going on about this verbal and I am not sure I understand it. Since when are rivals/scout/anyother recruiting service the end all be all of how a prospect wil turn out? Do people really think that TC should only be chasing 4 and 5 star recruits? Relax kids, I think TC & Co know exactly what they are doing.
  • IUDEW · 8 months ago
I've got to agree. Look at Goran Suton. Did he contribute to MSU as a senior? Was he a 5 star? 4 star? 3 star?

TC gets paid to make decisions like this. He sees something and I'm fine with his judgment.
  • Eric · 8 months ago
Not everyone on the team can be a top 150, 4 start recruit. If this kid turns in to nothing more than a 10-15 minute, 4 point, 2 rebound, 4-year player, then I am fine with that. Every program needs that type of player also. Maybe this is a bit early in the process to offer him a scholarship, but lets give Coach some leeway here.
  • JerryCT · 8 months ago
If we are going to "learn more about Williams" then i would like to know his ability to pass, handle the ball, apply defensive pressure, his character to stay all 4 years instead of bail out like the previous Williams.

What is his personality, work ethic and attitude in a team setting ? What are the chances his 3.8 GPA signals a kid who matures into a leader and a long term asset to a building program ?

Will he throw a potted plant at the coach, use drugs, refuse to play, refuse to go to class, or pull a Brandon McGee "dunk" when we are stalling out the clock against Michigan ?

Or will he kill the clock as designed or at least get over the rim and jam it down UM's throat

I am going with the coach , not the ranking services, who never seem to know or comment on anything but offensive stats.
  • JBLOTKAMP · 8 months ago
    JerryCT,

Couldnt have said it better. Just look at all the former hoosier recruits that were not highly ranked but made solid ball players. Not all highly ranked recruits pan-out.
  • Kelin Blab · 8 months ago
    Whoa people.......

    A couple of things here.....
    1. The Atlanta Celtics are one of the top AAU teams in the country....I believe one Josh Smith and Dwight Howard played on that team...

    2. Indiana getting a solid 6'7 wing player is a good thing as we have been guard heavy for ahwile...

    3. Making inroads in Florida is a plus, as there is another top recruit out of Florida we are looking at also.

    4. The kid has a 3.8gpa, so I am going to give him some credit for that

    5. For coach Crean to watch the kid workout last week and the kid commit this week, says Crean saw something he liked and went for it.

    6. Slow your roll on the two star things....How would you like these ONE star athletes to commit to IU now......D.Davis, Spencer Turner, Smith-Rivera, and Ron Patterson? All kids with ONE star and if we got ONE of them it would be HUGE......
  • SB_Hoosier · 8 months ago
I kind of wonder if this isn't a recruit that the staff is taking a bit of a chance on thinking that he will develop a lot over the next year, and also as an "in" to recruiting someone else. I'd be curious to know who is on his AAU/high school teams.

I believe he was hurt most if not all of his senior year, which caused his stock to take a hit, but I don't think Calbert Cheaney was a superstar recruit and he turned out alright.
  • Disco_Briscoe · 8 months ago
A bunch of little girls on here. McCleod has worked with this kid and he has size. I read everyone's comments on how we need size and stop recruiting (4-5 star) guards, because we have too many. Now we have a 6-7 player for all of you. If you want to be in shock look at all the players that have standing offers out there...there's a wide variety and not all 4-5 star players. Let it play out and see what happens before you all jump to your world is ending conclusions and myths. Yeah, having someone top ranked is ideal...but who are the people people putting stars next to these kids?...you never know until they step foot on the D1 court.
  • Alex · 8 months ago
There's a wide variety of reaction to this news. My stance would be that a lot of you aren't giving Crean enough credit if you really believe he would offer a scholarship to a kid that isn't worthy of it. I know some of you will point to the Jobe situation, but that was a totally different set of circumstances because the staff was trying to fill the roster so late in the process.

Regardless of his rankings, I've talked to one person who has an opinion that I value greatly and he told me the kid is good enough to play at IU. He recently grew two inches and improved a lot this season. Several programs were starting to look at him closely. Even if he doesn't turn out to be a star or even a starter, if he can fill a role and do what the coaches ask of him, that's good enough for me.
  • BFowler · 8 months ago
Look at any class of athletes that attend any given school. There are 4 and 5 star players and 2 and 3 star players. It is part of the deal. I think the kid has good size for a wing, and if he is a good kid with a solid work ethic, he may turn into something (he did average over 20 pts. and 11 rebs. per game last season, and the AAU team he plays for is reputable). You need kids who are willing to come in and do the things to make a team successful. I mean, Brian Sloan and Magnus Pelkowski did not play a minute in the final for the '87 championship team, but those two are NCAA Champions too.

The last thing I remember Coach Crean saying was the program was needing class balance. I am not saying this kid is gong to be a star, nor am I saying he is going to be a bust, but he IS going to be a Hoosier....that alone garners my support (unless he proves during the course of his tenure he does not deserve it; see: Denim Shirt, J. Ellis, D. Thomas, etc.). He provides what Coach was saying, class balance. 2-star rated kids rarely ever go early (after fresh. and soph. years) to the NBA.

As far as the scholly situation goes, one of three available in 2010 on a lower rated kid means absolutely nothing (see: Bobby C., Bawa) related to a stellar class. If you land a 4 or 5 star or two with the other two, then we won't be talking about this one anyway.

Just remember that a TEAM is made up of all kinds of people, some are A players, some are B players. Every good team has a Brian Cardinal, Joe Krabbenhoft-type player. For example, I contend that the 1989 team would not have won the Big Ten title without Todd Jadlow, nor the 2002 team without Jarrod Odle, not stars like Jay Edwards and Jared Jeffries, but certainly key players. Not everyone is going to average 20 ppg, and there is always a possibility that this one could, but everyone is on the TEAM for a reason, even Tijan Jobe.
  • Kelin Blab · 8 months ago
Just some more info I have seen......

I read he averaged 15-8-7 last year.......He is more of a point forward....

Here is a quote from him....

"After the Las Vegas tournament this summer, I had a few schools start calling a lot," Williams said. "Clemson was one of the first, but Kentucky saw me out there and liked how I played. Coach (Tracy) Webster said he was at my game where I had this huge dunk over this guy. I cradled the ball and went right over top of him while we was trying to block my shot. (Webster) said he loved my aggressiveness and how I attacked the rim."

I believe that leaves us with two scholly's for next year.....I expect one of the big three we want to commit....either Teague, Irving, or Fergunson....
  • Alex · 8 months ago
    Kelin,

    Teague is 2011.
  • Kelin Blab · 8 months ago
    I should definitely know that...dah....

Wow the IU faithful woke up this morning about signing a good player. I am sure a youtube video will surface soon to put everyone at ease......
  • JG · 8 months ago
Not sure if this is a re-post but I like this article by Hutch at IndyStar.

    http://blogs.indystar.com/hoosiersinsider/

I like this kid and this pick up by IU.

Having a forward who is a solid ball handler and adamently believes he is a "BIG guard" is something that fits Tom Crean's style. Look at Dwayne Wade.
I also love making the connection with the Atlanta Celtics and taking care of one of there own. I'm excitied to follow this kid before he comes to IU. I hope he sees some of this senseless whinning by some of the people on all the Hoosiers message boards. Talk about locker room motivational material for him.
  • CraiginOR · 8 months ago
the Indy Star article eased my mind and the thought of a 6'7 220lb guard just adds to what is looking like a great inside/outside game ability for Crean and IU
  • CraiginOR · 8 months ago
Indy Star article made me feel good about this kid. 6'7 220 lb and growing guard hmmmm
  • irntgr · 8 months ago
The only thing that matters in all of this is, the kid wants to play at IU. That's all that matters to me, and that's all we need.
  • Hardwood83 · 8 months ago
Like everyone else, I don't know squat about this guy- but I really don't know anything about ANY of the recruits out there other then someone else's opinion (star rating) or what I can glean from a 30 sec highlight video, which isn't much. I am not the least annoyed/concerned/dismayed by this.
  • Ben Young · 8 months ago
Yes, we have to fill roles. This guy could have shut down D, or he could be a leader, but we really don't know. Kentucky was interested and Crean offered so he must be worth it. We don't want to recruit a bunch of guys that want playing time and have them transfer. My personal opinion on rivals and scout is they are for the most part worthless.
  • Kelin Blab · 8 months ago
If I recall, before Jordan Hulls became, Jordan Hulls, he was rated pretty low, called slow, and not a D-1 talent.....then came a great summer, a Duke offer and the rest is history.........

Give the guy a chance, give crean some credit....and be reasonable...we can't have ALL the 5star kids people.......

Now if you keep this up, I have denim shirt's number and I will call him and let him know IU may be interested after Crean retires............
  • BGleas · 8 months ago
Any chance this is like the football player in Nevada last year that held a press conference announcing he was going to Cal, but it ended up no D1 schools were really recruiting him?

Ok, calm down, I'm just kidding!

Like everyone else, I agree every team needs roles players and if your role player is a 6-7 point forward that can handle and defend, that's a good thing. I think people problem is that this is so out of left field, and usually the 2-3 star role players are added after you've landed the big fish, not before.

Either way it's good to get a presence in Florida and with that AAU team.
  • James · 8 months ago
Just one quick comment...not to thread jack...but can people please stop using the - see Dwayne Wade) - as an argument supporting Tom Crean and his guard development or system?? I fully believe that he has the ability and is great at developing and finding talent...but lets use names like Dominick James, McNeal, Diener and Hulls instead of the once in a generation talent like D-Wade...k thats all.

-Crean is the same coach that you loved and trusted yesterday at this time. I would and do trust his judgment and I think you should too.
  • Kelin Blab · 8 months ago
Thanks for saying that cause it limits Crean success to just one player.....D.Wade was a great college player and find for crean but there were others..............
  • D.R. · 8 months ago
I think it is ok to give Crean credit for Wade. He clearly developed a talented, and apparently troubled, young man to the #5 pick in the NBA draft. I am not sure how many (if any) "stars" Wade was ranked... Its not as though Wade was a clear pro prospect in high school (i.e. Garnett, LeBron, Kobe, Howard).

From Wikipedia (so you know is has to be true)....

"Wade attended Harold L. Richards High School in Oak Lawn.[1] He did not see a lot of playing time his sophomore year as his stepbrother, Demetris McDaniel, was the star of the team.[5] Wade grew four inches in the summer before his junior year and proceeded to average 20.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.[6] Wade then averaged 27.0 points and 11.0 rebounds his senior year, and led his team to a 24–5 record.[6] They advanced to the title game of the Class AA Eisenhower Sectional,[6] during the season he set school records for points (676) and steals (106) in a season.[6]

Wade was recruited by only three schools (Marquette University, Illinois State, and DePaul University) as a result of academic problems."
  • SpaceCadet · 8 months ago
I would rather have an unranked & overlooked player come in with the chance to surprise with stellar play than have a highly ranked prospect come in and fizzle (ah-hem*Bracey Wright*ah-hem).

Regardless, Welcome to Indiana University Mr. David Williams. Here's to wishing for the best.
  • SB_Hoosier · 8 months ago
Agreed, and if this guy really develops (in the eyes of the scouting services) and all of a sudden would be a highly recruited guy, then we're ahead of the curve by having already signed him. I'm no D-1 coach, and can't say what his role may or may not be when he steps on campus, but if the coaching staff thinks he's worth a scholly, then I'm fine with it. They've already shown they can sign the 4 and 5 star guys, so for some reason I don't see this as settling or signing a role player.
  • JBLOTKAMP · 8 months ago
Does anyone know if David Williams was at any games this past season or if he visited that campus before comitting? If I remember right, Nick Williams committed without stepping foot on campus. Offical or unoffical visits?
  • Steve Martin · 8 months ago
Hi. I am a student at IU, but I am from Jax. The best AAU team in Jax is the Lee Bulls. Why would he go to Atlanta and play? He does have a legit 3.8 as he is a smart person. He went to a top Middle School in the city that take the best of the best academically. I saw him play a few times for the Bucs (First Coast High), and I read the Times Union daily during b-ball season. I don't even think he ever scored 21 in a game. He is a legit 6'6" 6'7" though. This is shaky. I think this may have more to do with AAU/college coaches' relationships and graduation rate than it does a big time recruit. He is a good person but average basketball player at best.
  • Kelin Blab · 8 months ago
Steve the Atlanta Celtics are a nationally known and competitive AAU program I am for certain they are better than any FLorida AAU team given the pedigree they have...
  • JerryCT · 8 months ago
I think Steve Martin above is probably accurate............for now..........the kid is only a maturing JR in HS.

It appears the 21P/G and 11 Rebs repeated here alot is untrue as S Martin says.

I checked the First Coast HS stats and he was not at all close to these numbers. He had a complete stat sheet however with assists. steals, blocks etc. but poor foul shooter.

Again, only a maturing JR, 3.8gpa, Crean knows basketball, I am on board.
  • MillaRed · 8 months ago
The first thing that sticks out as I read through these reactions is some of the bashing going on in here between bloggers. I've never seen comments quite like this on the site. Frankly, I thought this was a site that kept it cool and respected each other. Maybe I was wrong.

The kids dad is a firefighter? Mom is a teacher? Physical Therapy major? 3.8 GPA?

Look, there is more to this rebuilding program than meets the eye. We had a handful of dope smokers two classes ago. We just hauled in a 4-year kid that will boost the team GPA and by the way, he's a gifted athlete with good size? Bring him on........

Maybe this last season was necessary to humble us a little. I hope some of these reactions aren't an indication of things to come when Crean gets us back to glory.
  • ind23 · 8 months ago
could definitely play out into something good, be a good role player. but either way, welcome to IU!
  • ichaser · 8 months ago
Crean - Welcome to Indiana. Look at what you get to look forward to the rest of your time here. Whatever you do just don't feel like you have to explain yourself to us. Your the coach - this is your program and what you say and do is what it is. Who cares what other people think - those other people are accountants or lawyers or something besides the head of a major collegiate basketball program and there is a reason for that. In Crean I trust.
  • CutterInChicago · 8 months ago
    My 2 cents:

I think we would all agree that recruiting is an inexact science which depends on a multitude of factors, most of which are subjective.

A large part of this picture depends on the coach, in this case, Coach Crean who is getting paid a ton of money, is coming off a 6 win season and obviously has his reputation/future riding on decisions such as recruiting and making offers to kids like Williams - so I cannot imagine that he's just going to be giving scholarships away for giggles. Further, as the article says "Williams plays for AAU basketball for the Atlantic Celtics, an organization that Indiana assistant Roshown McCleod." Clearly, 2 of our coaching staff like something in this player.

Then combine all that with these recruiting ranking systems (which I will confess, I know little about their methodology - but wasn't Richard Mandeville the next big thing as opposed to turning out to be the poor man's Magnus Pelkowski?) which tend to fluctuate over time since these kids are growing boys who might develop as they mature (what a concept!)

So while we all want Coach Crean to sign the second coming of Calbert Cheaney, Isiah Thomas, A.J. Guyton, D.J. White, Scott May, Eric Gordon, Mike Woodson and Steve Alford, I think most of us realize that getting a few of those types of special players is the most likely scenario and surrounding them with other players who can fill roles on the team is critical.

    So, to sum up:
    David Williams, slowly gaining acceptance.
    Tom Crean, stay the course.
IU Hoops, thousand points of light

everybody is hating on a kid we know nothing about. Reminds me of someone.. i think he did ok in college. Something about a final four. believe he was the 5th pick in the draft. plays for the heat. won a championship in 06. and absolutely destroyed people in the NBA this year. whats his name again...

yeah that dude had three scholly offers and wasn't a five or four star either.

oh and by the way imagine you have waterford who is just about his height and seems to do the same things with the basketball and then you have this guy sub in for him. or better yet play at the same time. you tell me that won't cause match up problems. throw in a ridiculous point guard in teague and we could be the scariest team in the big ten in 2 years.

plus if this guy is as good as his stats are hell be a ranked player by next year anyhow
  • Trey Trice · 7 months ago
Dont worry bout this guy he is someone who is under the radar. Tom Crean has shown that he likes to recruit deep into FLorida and this kid is one of the nations elite. Give him by next year and he will be in the rivals top 150 with at least 3 to 4 stars.
  • markb · 5 months ago
Well, every team needs some seldoused players who are happy just to ride the pine, work hard every day at practice, and have a good attitude. Problem is, those guys should have the ability to at least be role players. But Williams ... well, as one service put it, "He could be a decent role player IF he improves ..."
Personally, for a progam that has already lost 1-2 scholarships due to infractions, I just don't get it. Why would you basically take away another scholarship for 4 years, but awarding it to a kid who really cannot compete at your level? I mean, you're taking a gamble when you are counting on the kid improving ... the only players you should take such gambles on are 7 footers, and even then, only freshmen (not junior college transfers who averaged all of 4 ppg and 4 rpg like Jobe). Frankly, I think Crean & Co. are recruiting like they're still at Marquette, and not at Indiana, an elite program.
