Inside the Hall: Good, Bad and Ugly: Wake Forest

Roth plays only 21 minutes and scores 12. Maybe he needs some more minutes. 12/22 from the free throw line. It wouldn't make a difference in the game, but we're just giving away points there. Silly turnovers killed us. Story's breakaway at beginning of second half, he goes for a layup and misses, they rebound and score. Set the tone for the rest of the game. He should have thrown it down hard. Overall, the effort was there, now if we could get some height. They will have my support all the way. Peace.

Yep, could've been worse...we could've lost to VMI or we could've lost by 33 like we did last time.

Gonzaga next. Eeek. Whatever the spread is, take the cover. Keep playin' hard Hoosiers. Go down kicking and screaming.

dumes tries too hard!! can anyone say TUO2??

I'm just wondering what the offensive expectation was with Moore, Fink, Roth, Jobe and Taber on the floor at the same time. Granted, it was only a couple of minutes... but.... all they had to do was put 2 on Roth.

I thought they looked good in the beginning of the first half, but it fell apart. The first part of the second half (WFU's 4 point) was scary, but for the next few minutes IU played well (they were 3 points down for the half), but it fell apart again.

Williams had a great game, was active on the boards. Story had an okay game. While Dumes had 9, he seemed to be missing in action.

They'll get better. Michigan State unfortunately is getting killed by UNC.

11:02, Dickie V makes first remark about "Robert Montgomery Knight". I know that is something that was discussed in the live blog
  • Ryan C. -- Mouthpiece Blog · 11 months ago
Yeah, I think we said the over/under was twenty minutes on that. So, at 11:02 into the game, had 20 minutes gone by in total time yet?

Who's got the watch on that one?

Is anyone else as frustrated with Dumes as I am? I feel as though he tries to do too much, and ends up turning the ball over, shooting terrible 3's outside of his range (someone tell him he's no Matt Roth), and driving to the hoop and flinging up a prayer to the rim. I think he tries to act like the team leader, but in the end he just ends up turning the ball over. I dunno, maybe I'm asking too much out of him since he has the most D-I and/or college basketball experience out of anyone (sorry, Taber doesn't count--haha), but I'm extremely let down by his performances.

I agree. I'd say he's been the most disappointing to me so far. In all fairness I was probably expecting too much. I thought he would be a stabilizing player for IU this year, but he looks more like a freshmen than anyone.

He seems to lose concentration and focus. How many of his turnovers are a result of not catching the ball cleanly, or fumbling it, or dribbling into people? He'll also pick up dumb fouls. I think he had one about 45' from the basket in one of their first posessions last night. In the first few games I thought he was trying too hard, but it almost seems like his mind is elsewhere during games at times.

    My thoughts as well.

The Good: We're stringing together more minutes of competitive play in our losses: ND- 4 min. (maybe), St. John- 7-8 min., Wake- solid 14-15 min. of good action. Sure they've all ended ugly, but, as Crean loves to say, it's measurable improvement. Matt Roth finally found his groove. After watching IL h.s. highlights all summer, I was beginning to wonder if we got Matt or his nearsighted twin brother. If a couple other guys could get a streak going and knock down some jumpers, we'd be a whole lot closer when the final horn sounds.

The Bad & FUGLY: Not just the measurably horrendous number of turnovers, but the way in which we're giving them up. TOs deep in the backcourt are leading to 2-on-1 & 3-on-1 fast breaks waaay to often. They're killing us. In each of our losses, our opponents' points off turnovers has exceeded the margin of victory. 54.5% from the charity stripe is below the Big 10 average....for 3rd string centers.

The Lovely- Once again Michigan St. has started the season grossly overrated, only to leave the pundits left to justify their ranking after a 35 point thumping tonight. I also love to see Matt Painter whine. Fortunately for me, he obliges....often and excessively.

MSU will get better and be kicking a lot of butt. They always lose early then peak in Feb/Mar. Plus no Suton. Once he's back and they start clicking, watch out.
  • ALH_00 · 11 months ago
To reiterate what seems to be a theme for the season, I'm looking for significant improvement/consistency with turnovers and free-throw shooting. Those are things that are primarily in their control and are fundamentals (which I would expect to be hammered on by Crean each day).

Overall, it wasn't terrible to watch ...at least we were treated to some great athleticism. :)
  • Hoosiergirl · 11 months ago
I'd agree with that, first half was actually rather impressive minus the TO.
  • IndianaJoe · 11 months ago
One other fundamental I'd like to see to get better is the help side D. It has been pretty pathetic in just about every game I have watched.

I'd like to compare last nights game to playing PowerBall Lottery....
    1. As the season approached--we got excited about the possiblities of actually winning a few games we weren't supposed to (i.e. Going to the gas station and pulling out the 3 foot long card with all the lottery numbers on there...we fill in 6 numbers thinking "these are the winners baby!!")

    2. We sit down every night waiting for the game to come on...anxiously awaiting the effort and discipline we so desperately desired out of last year's team (i.e. We stay up til 11pm to watch the live drawing of the powerball numbers)

    3. Game is started with us actually grabbing a lead on a 3-point shot!!! (We have the first NUMBER as they pull the lottery ball out of the bingo machine!!!!)

    4. The team looked respectable for the first 10 minutes (Holy COW!!! we actually had the 1st two numbers out of the bingo machine!)

    5. ALL hell breaks loose! (i.e. We don't see a number withing 10 digits of our remaining 5 numbers!!!)

    6. There's always the next game! (i.e. Can't wait for Saturday to play the powerball or hoosier lotto AGAIN!!! and suffer the same disappointing agony of going through steps 1-5 all over again!!!)

KEEP FIGHTING HOOSIERS! AT LEAST YOU ARE ALL PASSING YOUR CLASSES! THE CAVALRY IS ON ITS WAY!

OK lets look at the positives:

    - team played hard the entire game
    - offense scored as well as they are expected to, at least no worse
    - Pritchard seriously outmanned did not panic and did not force, looks like a great passer
    - Story seems to always step up to the competition , at the point reminds me of Frank Johnson
    - Moore competes his heart out
    - Roth found some shooting and actually looked ok in the zone
    - no one got knocked out

I think Wake can hang with UNC so we should not be disappointed in the loss
