Inside the Hall: Friday Roundup: Wisconsin, Kravitz and Knight

  • Steve · 1 year ago
I completely agree that Calipari would not be a good candidate for IU at this point, but I see nothing wrong with Kevin Stallings. I am embarrassed every time the Purdue background as an excuse not to go after him. As a lifelong Purdue hater I am still open to consider anyone that will help the program (except Bruce Weber).
RMK was great on Mike and Mike this morning. I love it when anyone puts Greeny in his place. "We are done with that subject Michael."
  • HoosierSmitty · 1 year ago
I know it's wrong...but there's no way I could ever accept a Purdue guy roaming the IU sidelines, even if he was the "best" option. That being said, he is not the best option the Hoosiers have, nor do I think he is interested in the position.

I've said it before, but could you really handle listening to Purdue fans talk about how the only way Indiana cleaned up its act was by bringing in a Boilermaker? Boiler fans are pathetic enough...let's not give them some other lame reason to try and validate how Purdue is better than Indiana. Imagine if Stallings brought 5 titles to IU (which wouldn't happen..but just imagine...) Do you want to take those titles and listen to Purdue fans try and take credit for it? Forget it. We'll find someone else who will win titles with us.
  • briank · 1 year ago
I agree with you. But the one good comeback for us would be " thats the only way Purdue could come close to championship."
  • dabig · 1 year ago
Sorry, but I don't care what Purdue fans talk about. I care about where the banners hang. I'll let Purdue fans complain about every single banner in Assembly Hall. I wish them a lot to complaint about.
  • B (MD) · 1 year ago
This is off topic, but I just read an article at ESPN about Michael Beasley, and I'm not trying to make excuses for Sampson, but Beasley's single mother moved her family of five from Washington DC to Kansas when Beasley enrolled there. Beasley also drives a Chevy Tahoe, and I'm sure he had a bunch of cell phones and the latest iPod. Plus, he didn't sign with K-State until his AAU coach got hired as an assistant.

I'm 30 years old and married with a baby daughter. My wife and I combine for over six figures, not much over, but over, and there's no way I could afford the monthly payments on a Tahoe unless it was completely stripped with no bells and whistles.

With that said, Sampson's getting investigated for phone calls?!?! Seems a little off to me.
  • JamesHardy · 1 year ago
Great thoughts! The only reply I could come up with was the old addage....

"It's only cheatin if you get caught."

Beasley's situation sounds an awful lot like LeBron James and his H3 he (or was it his mom?) rolled in while he was a senior in HS waiting for the NBA ink to dry.
  • MLOVE · 1 year ago
ITS ABVT TIME SOMEONE IS STARTIGN TO REALIZE WHATS GOING ON!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Matt J. · 1 year ago
And we all know that Bob Huggins is a squeaky clean individual with no NCAA violations on his record.

    Wait...
  • Jay · 1 year ago
Is it possible the NCAA people are getting paid off, too? Why else would they only investigate when it was convenient, but completely ignore what is obvious to everyone else? (And what about USC's football program with players ADMITTING they were paid? No investigation, no fines, hardly even any press. Just national championships to show for it.) Please, someone explain this to me. I'm serious.
  • Matt J. · 1 year ago
Because when you're dealing with big money players (Bush, Beasley) or big money franchises (U$C), then the NCAA conveniently looks the other way. They make money off of the hype that surrounds these players with tv contracts, people attending their games, all that. They make money off USC being consistently good as they're reaping the benefits of no NFL franchise in LA.

Conversely, who gives a damn about Bloomington, IN? They're not making as much money off the Hoosiers as they are the other big money stars and teams, and so they'll come down hard on them.
  • Jay · 1 year ago
Thanks, Matt J. The NCAA also uses examples like ours to keep other programs in line. They make it clear that they can and will wreck careers, cost coaches and schools millions - all while "enforcing" rules as they see fit. This is what happens when an organization has no competition. Wouldn't it be great if the IRS went after the NCAA? Now that is a steel cage match made in heaven.
  • briank · 1 year ago
That's 100% correct. Remember Corey Maggette and Duke. The man admitted in open court to being paid by alumni. IN COURT ADMITTED UNDER OATH. NCAA said the y would look into it and swept it under the rug. Never heard about it again. They just waitied for the press to die down so they could forget about it. NCAA is about as crooked as Bud Selig and MLB.
  • Jay · 1 year ago
You really struck a chord with this post BMD. Inside the Hall should have a separate story about the NCAA.
  • B (MD) · 1 year ago
I just read that article on Beasley and it really made me think that Sampson got railroaded by the NCAA. I'm not a Sampson guy, I'm actually pretty excited about the chance to now get the right coach...But it sucks that all this will set the program back a few years.

Anyways, I just found this site a couple weeks ago, and it think it's great. I'll definitely keep checking it out daily.
  • Don D · 1 year ago
Look at the stuff with Reggie Bush at USC. They also interviewed Derrick Rose and ask why he choose Memphis State and responded by saying they gave me what I ask for. When we look in the future at this violation of kS and IU it's minor compared to other problems. The NCAA will continue to turn their back on the Kansas State's, USC's and do nothing. How about the football program at OSU? Did nothing and we are to feel good about their investigation of our basketball program? Mark Cuban a former IU grad talks about how the corrupt the NCAA is. Jeff Myer gives Derrick Elston and shirt and this is a violation? Come on people - who governs the NCAA/
  • Jay · 1 year ago
Who DOES govern the NCAA? Do they report to anyone? And don't say the schools themselves. The NCAA has so much power that any one school (or conference, for that matter) is too intimidated to stand up to them for fear of vindictive backlash.
  • Ricky · 1 year ago
I actually wouldn't mind having Worldwide Wes hanging around IU, if it meant we get players like Derrick Rose. My only problem with Calipari is that I don't know if he recruits the kinds of kids that win national titles. good teams always, yes, but he never has had a good free throw shooting team, and usually does not have a team that shoots the 3 very well. those are things that can lose you ball games to teams you are better than, and that is why you have never seen him cut down the nets. but, we could do much much worse
  • Matt J. · 1 year ago
Are they really that good of a team, or are they just an above-mediocre team playing in a crap league? That's the questions you have to ask. UMass was a stand-alone in the A-10. He failed utterly in the NBA (which is not unexpected) and now he's at Memphis, where Conference USA has a bunch of teams as threatening as wet kittens (with apologies to the kittens).

I'm not sold on Calipari. Plus, he's a slimeball.
  • jgongora · 1 year ago
I hate kravitz.. I know its not deep, but thats all i got
  • Hoosier_Hound · 1 year ago
What the hell is with this statement from Kravitz, "The sad reality is, IU is unlikely to hire another man of color -- why, I don't know."

I know Kravtitz likes to get off by stirring the pot, but that goes way farther than he usually does. How can he accuse a IU, whose last two men's basketball coaches, current women's basketball coach, and former president were minorities, of going into this search looking at race? That is complete bull. Race will play zero part in this coaching search.

How does Kravitz know who IU is considering hiring anyway? Nobody saw the Sampson hire coming until it happened. So he must be labeling IU as racist because more media types aren't mentioning Paul Hewitt for the job. It's funny that he mentions Alford's poor record at Iowa, but he ignores Hewitt's 51-61 ACC record so he can point the racism finger at IU. You are sick Mr. Kravitz.
  • Matt J. · 1 year ago
Kravitz is still riding the fact that Tyrone Willingham is black AND no longer at Notre Dame. let's ignore the fact that he's a mediocre coach and piss-poor recruiter. He's black, Notre Dame hates black people!!!

Even Jason Whitlock gives IU a pass on the Davis situation. Kravitz needs to be taken out of the journalistic population.
  • Sam B · 1 year ago
the grass is not always greener on the other side. There are 3 distinct elements of the job- coaching, recruiting, leading in the school and community as well as marketing the program to the world. If this is accurate, we may need to grow our own and get help from some of the alumni that have skills and desire to make IU basketball the No. 1 program in the nation. If Dakich has the potential then lets build on it. If he doesn't then lets not pick someone that cannot grow into all we want.
  • Ryan_Btown · 1 year ago
I'm not necessarily opposed to Dakich. I don't think he did a very good job the other night but I'll reserve judgement until he gets a little more situated. Although no one is really acting like he's going to get the job, it sure seems like he's campaigning for it. I think he'd do alright with some good assistants around him, as long as he would take their advice.
  • CB in OR · 1 year ago
Big A, You always get it right (so far )Calipari is on the city council of Slimytown, Stallings LOOKS like a Purdue graduate and former Coach Knight was an ok "color" analyst when he and Al McGuire joined Billy PACCker in announcing some NABC all star gathering or something. Memory has faded.
Bennet is a chump...go to the Washington www athletics site and read about his wins and losses. Please take a serious look at former all american, NBA all star, announcer and 10 year Duke Assistant Head Coach Johnny Dawkins. The man has crossed his "ts" and dotted his "is". He has rejected other offers... I think we are the right fit.
  • briank · 1 year ago
Posted in wrong spot. But I don't think anyone has gone after Dawkins since Ohio St was rumored to of a couple years ago. He waitin for coach K to retire. And I read the website didn't see anythign that bad. He seems promising. I dont like Calipari. Bennett isn't my top choice but he is up there.
  • Alex · 1 year ago
Just as an update here on Stallings, heard Fisch on the radio today and he said he doesn't see much of a chance that IU would go after Stallings.
  • ronb · 1 year ago
Big A ... I am with you on Calipari and we do not want anyone connected with
PU! Kravitz dislikes IU and bashes us every time he gets a chance. Really I do not think he likes any Indiana teams with the exception of Purdue. Leave
it to him to bring up the color issue. What an idiot. I am not trying to defend
Sampson but the NCAA has it in for IU and it starts with their leader. He isn't
over the Knight thing. I think Dan has handled the media and the players very
well so far. There is a lot to be said about someone who LOVES IU basketball
    as much as he does.
  • garydavid711 · 1 year ago
TONY BENNETT-Then it is downhill from there.---
  • briank · 1 year ago
Hows it downhill after Tony B? I read the website on him. Looked ok to me. He seems promising.
  • briank · 1 year ago
I don't think anyone has gone after Dakins since Ohio St was rumored to a coupple years ago. He's waiting for Coach K to retire.
  • IRISHP1MP · 1 year ago
http://wsucougars.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/... If anybody wants to learn more about Tony Bennet and why he would be a great fit at IU please check out this link. He stresses hard work on and off the court, and is tabbed as a great recruiter. I say give him a shot his basketball background is lifelong and he has played overseas and in the NBA. Word is he also is a players coach and has had many academic all conference players....this is the guy we need
  • JamesHardy · 1 year ago
    Nice link...u pimp u!
  • Raymond · 1 year ago
To even mention John Calipari is possibly the most moronic sin any fan or person associated with this University could commit. Didn't we just FIRE someone for rules violations? Additionally, I would love to see us have an OFFENSE again...not just street ball.
  • kelin · 1 year ago
Big A watch a Vandy game and then insert our talent in there system.....YOu will change your mind about stallings.....The ONLY thing Stallings would need to do fully would be to fully dislike Painter and Weber....then I would 100% accept him .....SOLID coach....
  • Sam Snead · 1 year ago
no purdue association........i don't care. I don't care if kevin stallings was the coach of duke and won 8 tittles in a row. i would disassoiciate from the program that gives me a reason to live. I really would. I haven't missed an IU basketball game since 1989. I want the best there is. Hiring KS was a mistake from the get go. I like him. I don't care what any of you say. He got great player and showed great potetial, and a love to win like we all share. I believe it was a mistake on the university's part to give us that kind of coach under the heat he was on and then have it stripped from up. If Miles Bramd is the head of the NCAA don't hire a coach under heat at a top program. At least not at IU. I mean the studends damn near burned down his house. How stupid could one be to hire someone with heat already on him. I mean this guy didn't really do much wrong. Come on....some phone all. There were over a hundred schools in the same boat as us and they weren't brought into as much media hype as un. It just sucks to hire a coach that has a chance of being fire, like we were delt wth. I liked sampson.....his offfence sucked, but the players loved him, and thats what is all about. I just hate accepting a coach and having him stripped from us. All you KS hates need to understand that this man kept us ranked all yearl, and that what he did wasn't really that bad. IU needs to step up to the plate and get the best of the best this time.
  • Sam Snead · 1 year ago
    sorry about my spelling
  • JamesHardy · 1 year ago
For a guy that hates Purdue so much, why does it appear that you have a Purdue education???? Are you telling me that if Matt Painter became available, you wouldn't want him? I think he's the BEST young coach in AMERICA...bar none! I would love to see him coaching our Hoosiers, I don't care if he wast Osama Bin Laden's offspring, the guy can flat out coach and do it the RIGHT way! BTW...I was just playin with that first sentence!
  • T · 1 year ago
    * Bob Kravitz is like a Jay Marioti wannabe....Which is pathetic for a number of reasons.

    * There is nothing worse in sports right now then the hypocrisy of the NCAA...Not steroids and lying in baseball, not the thugs in football...nothing. The NCAA big wigs take the cake.

    * I don't know what or why, but Kevin Stallings just doesn't feel right. As for Bennet, I'm not going to trust links that come from his own school's website, of course they're going to talk him up. That's not to say I don't think that he could be a great coach at IU, but maybe a little more info. then what Washington State has to say.
  • Matt J · 1 year ago
The comparison of Kravitz to Marriotti is priceless. I laughed. And then I laughed some more.

The closest thing to the hypocrisy of the NCAA would be the hypocrisy of NASCAR. I think they get together and swap notes.

Kevin Stallings doesn't feel right because he looks like Burglekutt from Willow.

Is it true that the MSU students are on spring break and that there wont be as many deushe-bags there tomorrow?
  • JamesHardy · 1 year ago
Is it safe to assume that by your spelling of douche...you don't use summer's eve? Sorry, that chats been dead lately...but to answer your question, yes MSU started spring break yesterday. But for some reason, there aren't many tickets available to the game according the MSU athletics website
  • Matt J · 1 year ago
The teenager inside me always found it amusing that "douche" was the French word for "shower". Even now I'm giggling.
  • Jason Herd · 1 year ago
Knight's upcoming appearance as an analyst isn't ironic; its hypocritical. If ESPN had any integrity, they would have someone with some class analyze their tournament games, and pass on Knight and his history of intimidating and embarassing reporters. I used to worship the ground Knight walked on, when I was a kid. Then, when I grew up and began seeing other great basketball minds NOT being jerks, cursing, kicking, belittling, bullying and tormenting, I started to see through Bob Knight. My loyalty has been, and always will be, with IU.
  • ALH_00 · 1 year ago
Knight has alot to offer. First and foremost, people will tune in just to see what might happen when RMK joins the ranks of those he despised so much during his coaching career. = Big money for the WWL.
  • Raymond · 1 year ago
If anything, it defines ESPN's integrity bringing in Knight, and that's coming from someone who is none too found of the network. ESPN went out and got the most knowledgeable person available to cover college basketball DESPITE the fact that he has trashed some of the network's own. They're doing there job to the best of their ability. As far as Knight's stance on the media, he was absolutely doing his job. The media is about sensationalism and what would make the biggest story and Coach Knight's priority was to protect his team. We all know the bullshit questions reporters ask for the purpose of being divisive and sensational, and to say that Coach Knight was prodded beyond the way the media went after any other Coach would be the understatement of the century!!! And if you think Coach Knight is any kind of exception in the coaching world for his antic you CLEARLY have never been involved in any competitive team sport.
  • BrianK · 1 year ago
He's not being hypocritical. Theres a difference between being an analyst and being a reporter. If you don't like seeing coaches curse, belittle, bullying and tormenting I guess you've never paid close attention to some of the best coaches ever or played any sports. Knight wrong was not caring who saw him doing it. Coach K, Calipari, Pitino keep it from public alot Bill G is big time bully but hides it pretty well. Not all successful coaches are pat ya on the butt, thank, "come on you can do it if you try" " you need a hug" type coaches.
  • kelin · 1 year ago
    Interesting thought.......

    1. I wish Homer Drew wasn't an old guy...he is a helluva coach.....
    2. How would anyone feel about Homer Drew coaching while hiring his son to succeed him at the same time?
    3. Brad Brownell is a solid coach....
  • JamesHardy · 1 year ago
    My thought is this...
If Dakich can get this team to play TOGETHER, I say he keeps the job. If Ellis, Thomas, and Crawford keep playing "IMMATURE" basketball, I say cut ties with DD and bring in Bennett. What are Hoosier faithful clamoring for/????

    1. Young---Tony's 38
    2. Winner---I'd say Nat'l Coach of the Year is pretty...uh...well, he's a winner
    3. Recruiter---Devin Harris, Alando Tucker, Brian Butch (ew, i think i just vomitted in my mouth)
    4. Clean---uh...not sure what to say about this one...but I'm pretty sure we won't be seeing Tony Bennett in any Verizon Wireless commercials anytime soon.

Granted Wazzu was a poor team recently, it should show you that in a four year span, he has taken a team that was perrenially the doormat of the PAC10 and has had them in the top 25 for the past 2 seasons...and he did it WITHOUT his dad.

As a consolation prize, i would definitely take Scott Drew too.
  • Jay · 1 year ago
Bennett's best recruiting job? Getting McDonald's All Star Brian Butch to redshirt his freshman year. If Bennett can land a 6' 11" center while telling him he'll be benched for the entire first season, he's one terrific recruiter. Honest, too. Butch has had a so-so career, but at the time, everyone wanted him, including Duke and IU.
  • CoveyDale · 1 year ago
yeah, that or maybe the fact that he handed alando tucker his only major D-I offer.
  • Jay · 1 year ago
I'd forgotten how unknown Tucker was.
  • JamesHardy · 1 year ago
butch had some serious family issues (I believe that his mom was battling cancer) when he redshirted on his own accord. That had nothing to do with Bennett
  • Jay · 1 year ago
I live in Madison, and the newspapers here reported that Butch was recruited with the understanding that he might redshirt because he needed time to develop. That does't contradict what you said, though. The decision may have been a close one that was finally tipped by family issues.
  • Raymond · 1 year ago
Can I just throw out the idea that we cut ties with Thomas either way and let him head back to juco...or mcdonalds. He is absolutely worthless. Inept offensively and too fat and slow on defense and I have never seen someone whine so much to officials. The guy is worth 2 points, 4 fouls and 6 big macs per game.
  • Matt J · 1 year ago
If you want to see someone whine to the officials, watch Hansbrough. Or any Duke player. DeAndre could take some notes.
  • BrianK · 1 year ago
Please let me know what qualifies and what is on DD's resume that says he deserves the head coach position permanently. I don't care if they won the Cahmpionship I wouldn't want him to stay as head coach. This would be a Mike Davis situation all over again. How does a guy coaching for 10 yrs at a mid major with a record barely above 500, 4 out of his last 5 seasons were losing ones, only head coaching the last 5 games of the season for IU make him qualified for IU.
  • JamesHardy · 1 year ago
check bill belichek's record prior to taking over in new england...he sucked with the browns. just a counterpoint to your arguement against DD.
  • Matt J · 1 year ago
I really liked the offensive and defensive sets on both sides of the Valpo/Wright State game today. I even watched that in lieu of watching NC State meltdown (again) which is always good for some laughs. Both Drew and Brownell would be good fits at Indiana, but I don't think Homer would leave Valpo. He's got himself quite a niche there, and Valpo just moved into a stronger league and they're already competing.
  • kelin · 1 year ago
Matt that was a"goodlooking" game to watch....Brownell would make me happy at IU...and my gut tells me he is one of the leading candidates....
  • Matt J · 1 year ago
Calbert Cheaney would probably agree. I guess they played together in high school, and he was an assistant for Crews at Evansville for a long time.

It's like hiring someone in the IU family tree but without really being in the IU family tree.
  • kelin · 1 year ago
Given IU's recent buyout payments it would be a lot less expensive to hire Brownell than a bigger name.....nevertheless....I could see an Armon, Jordan, and my favorite IU player NOT named EJ or DJ thrive in that offense......Matt "freakin" Roth....

Got two words for you ....You Tube
    I love that kid.....
  • Josh · 1 year ago
The thing that was so ridiculous about the article was that the first half talked about whoever we get HAS to be squeaky clean.........and then he suggests Calipari. So I lost all respect for whatever Kravitz has to say.
