You see this thing all the time. The new coach after something like this has to recruit some JUCO players the first year to cover the holes left by transfers and defected recruits, but that's the price we're just going to have to pay to get rid of the cheater. Maybe if IU makes a splash quickly with a big name coach that would change!

Re: Friday link dump

anybody worried about losing Ebanks to Rutgers or Miami, if Sampson is fired?

Re: Friday link dump

why not - he could bring some of those hot chicks he used to have on the show

Re: Friday link dump

Can Harry Anderson help christen it?

Re: Friday link dump

Thats pretty awesome. I thought when IU was last searching for a coach, I had read something about Majerus' mom being in Indiana. Of course, that was two years ago, and I hear rumors that people tend to move from one place to another from time to time.

Thanks for the follow up for me.

Re: Friday link dump

I thought about Brey, but he turned down NC State, so I'm going to guess he's happy in Notre Dame. Granted, IU is a much, much, much better program than NC State could ever hope to be, but still, he seems pretty set.

Re: Friday link dump

actually, i believe that Rick's mom is in southern Wisconsin. I'm pretty sure that's what I read in SI. Keno Davis - Drake (Big Ten Ties - obviously)

2. Rick Pitino (may wanna take another chance at a real program)

3. Tom Creen - Marquette (I still have a man crush on this guy as a coach)

4. Mike Brey - Notre Dame (seems to have a pretty steady program at a football school, huh?)

5. Randy Bennett - St. Mary's (tough conference to build a program in with Gonzaga stealing everyone but he's been successful and runs a tight ship!)

Re: Friday link dump

I agree with you here! Indiana ties should be down on the list of concerns. What's important is getting a coach who is a proven recruiter (who does in honest) and willing to take a chance on a program in turmoil. Let's face it, even in turmoil Indiana is a top tier program. Let's remember how well Rick Patino did at Kentucky after he took over for Sutton who was I believe being investigated. There are just some programs that a coach will take a chance on even if the school is on probation or worse and Indiana is one of them. This isn't going to be an SMU case (football) where the NCAA destroys the program. By those standards, this should be a slap on the wrist and most coaches won't be that scared!!!

Re: Friday link dump

I thought of a couple more possibilities. How about Todd Licklighter (i didn't feel like looking up the spelling) from Iowa. I know he's in the Big 10 but it's definitely a step up and he's been in the state. And another guy I think is always looking for that next exciting move is Bruce Pearl at Tennessee. Tennessee is a football school and always will be and he knows that. He may consider a move to a basketball school and somehow I think he would like the challenge of a program in turmoil. He seems like an ego guy but a good coach and recruiter!!!

Re: Friday link dump

Lets be honest with ourselves here gentlemen.. IU paid $60,000 to a research firm and after searching all coaching candidates in the U.S. decided on Kelvin Cheaterpants. I hope they don't throw another 60 grand away.. Kelvin was the best we could do? Come on people.. IU is still a top 10 job in college basketball. No reason we shoudn't be able to get a top 10 coach. Go after the greats, who cares.. fuggit ask Coach K!!!

Re: Friday link dump

First off...it's sad that we're forced to discuss this during the season...but screw it...it's going to come, so let's deal with it now.

After doing some research during my extended lunch break I'm going to have to say either Thad Matta or Anthony Grant should be our top two candidates.

I'm torn between which one I'd rather have, but I frankly doubt we'd be able to pull Matta away from OSU. I'd offer it to him first, see what happens, then aggressively pursue Grant from VCU. Matta's Indiana ties are the big reason I think I'd pick him over Grant. Both can recruit well and know how to coach based on based records and performance.

Grant helped bring the guys in who won titles at Florida, so I think he could do the same at Indiana. I also think he'd be willing and able to make the jump to a big time program and conference. He might not have Indiana ties, but that should be a secondary concern...

Re: Friday link dump

I cannot remember if a B-10 coach has ever left one team for another B-10 school. Everything else has been against fairly subpar competition.

Victories against Wake Forest and Georgia Tech would be impressive if they weren't at home and if they weren't against a team that just lost a ton of talent to the NBA (Ga. Tech) and one that has been rebuilding for a couple of years and lost their coach tragically (Wake).

I'll pass on Stallings, too. I don't care that he's from Purdue. His teams chronically underachieve. The fact that they've gone on yet another nosedive after feasting on a subprime pre-conference schedule is no surprise.

Re: Friday link dump

Beating USC isn't that impressive. Unless he's beaten USC twice this year in football.

gonzaga is having a down year. Baylor is good, but not great.

20 wins a year is impressive, unless they come against Eastern Washington, Montana and the Citadel. The only impressive win he's had this year was at Arizona St. And that was by one point. And that's not even all that impressive.

Re: Friday link dump

What about a young head coach that won 7 coach of the year awards in one season, 2 more than John Wooden in his best year ? What about the Naismith national COY in 2007 ? What if the coach is familiar w the B-10 ? What if he is a 20+ game winner in every yr? What if the coach has beaten USC 2 times this yr, Gonzaga, Baylor etc.

Why NOT Tony Bennett OR do we want to whine about hard workiing offenses because we love ours so much

Re: Friday link dump

Dude have you seen Ohio State's talent? They have absoulutely no outside scoring threat and really not a great scoring threat period. They lost 4 really good players to the NBA last season (Odin, Connely, Cook, and that really good shooting guard.. his name is slipping beyond me right now and is pissing me off). They are 8-4 in the Big Ten and 17-8 overall. After losing that much talent I would say thats pretty damn good.

I say we go after Matta. He is an incredible recruiter and a great coach. I could easily root for him.

Re: Friday link dump

Agreed. Two thoughts:

1) Alford wouldn’t cut it. If you can’t handle the Iowa job, there is no way you can handle this one. Not even worth a look
2) I haven’t seen or read enough on Kevin Stallings to say whether I think he is a worth talking to. However, I would never ever want to rule out a candidate because of an affiliation to Purdue (he was a grad student there). That’s asinine.

Re: Friday link dump

Considering what he lost, though, he's done a good job. I can't imagine it either but for some reason I feel like he has struggled there this season. Just can't get over that great recruiting class they had last year and I think he's finally seeing how hard it is to compete with football at OSU.

Re: Friday link dump

I like the guy, but I also thought about what you said. Coached under that prick weber. A good friend of mine played for So. Illinois when they first went to the Sweet 16 (road the bench for them) and is good friends with Weber. You can't say anything bad about him in front of that guy. But moral of the story, he says this Lowery kid is a great guy too.
