Inside the Hall: Feb. 16, 2009: The day the Internet decided to bash Indiana for all the wrong reasons

  • Kelin Blab · 10 months ago
Ryan reading this makes me appreciate this website and the IU/Indiana as a state fanbase overall...even PU fans....here is why....

    1. Anyone with half a brain and NO knowledge of the recent past of IU would not write that KS was gone because of EJ. The 'blogger' should have used that 'email machine' a little better......

    2. Ryan you missed the boat, you see Bob Knight was a not only a great coach but he also had Ms. CLeo type powers where he could see into the future and see what problems a player would have and address them before hand. Unfortunately NO ONE else on this earth has those powers so we all must demand Bob be rehired.

    3. A knowledgeable fanbase is a good fanbase, and that is what IU has. We know what the hell is going on with the program and those who say IU won't return any time soon to success have been "bonging it with the swimmer'.....

    4. Shhh don't tell Creek, Wateford, Elston or others..... IU is not in a major city like those big towns of storrs, CT or the happening town like winston salem...... we wouldn't want them to find out Bloomington is the place where those crazy 5 NCAA banners are stored.....

    What a MO'RON

Why you bother yourself with the blog of someone who clearly doesn't know a thing? You are giving him the credit he desires..... ignore it....

Big thanks to the writers at ITH. I was seething at work reading this crap today. It's one thing to watch your team suck. It's much worse to then watch hack writers misunderstand the reasons behind the suck and spew their BS to the masses...

    THANKS GUYS!

Sad but not surprising to say the least.........Out of the all the kids that left...Jamarcus was one I wanted to see turn it around for HIS sake personally....

    All I have is a full-hearted, "AMEN!"

Sweet. I can now say with authority that my blog ranks no lower than third worst on the Internet. I haven't read Deadspin since Will Leitch left, and it's clear that I'm not missing much.

I cannot even add anything to that. Beautiful. Thank you. Thank you so much for answering the critics and representing us so well.

I think the thing that makes me the most hopeful is the work ethic I have seen this year. It is painful to watch this team sometimes, yes, but they are never dogging it out there. If last year's team fought half as hard and worked half as hard (with the exception of DJ & EJ) they would have been phenomenal. Coach Crean has made this Indiana basketball again. Playing tough. Playing hard. And nothing is going to be given to these kids. This guy is a coach. This is like the old days and I cannot verbalize how excited I am about it.

I remember how my mom would always tell me to ignore the little, annoying scabs and not pick at them. And how before I knew it, they would just disappear.

After reading Josh Q. Public's (Mariotti pseudonym?) latest "post" -- I can re-affirm that Mom IS always right.

Good post in response to some pathetic, lazy, internet muck-raking.

How many recruits read Frobes? It would be great if we were recruiting economy majors
  • jhoban19 · 10 months ago
'economy' majors??? sorry, that just sounded funny..... the correct field of study would be 'economics'.....

Really? So Marquette was a mediocre program and was brought to national fame by Crean? History didn't begin when ITH was born, they did have a title and a pretty damn famous coach named Al McGuire before Crean.

I understand what you are saying to a point. Lets not act like Marquette hoops was born when Crean got there and don't be so quick to anoint Crean the chosen one before he proves himself, after all I dont remember any Sampson players taking 3 cheap shots in a game at the opposing player. If Dumes had played under Sampson you all would have thrown him under the bus like you did Jamarcus and the rest of last years boys.

The bottom line is that because the NCAAmilesbrands decided to bust Sampsons nuts for something EVERY coach does then you all act like we are this squeaky clean program now, not happning now, and will never happen. Its a part of NCAA sports and you cant win without a little hanky panky. If you think you can, well, you are an idiot.

The point here was that it was pretty sparse between McGuire's tournament run and Tom Crean coming on the scene. Despite Crean and McGuire's efforts, however, Marquette is never on the A-list of schools that come to mind when you think "traditional powerhouse". Guys in Raleigh, North Carolina aren't saying that Marquette is a destination job, like they do/did with Indiana.
  • Ryan C. · 10 months ago
Noted, Dan. I probably shouldn't have been so dismissive of Marquette's program. But, Al McGuire led the team to prominence in the 70s.

Crean led them back there some 30 years later.

And sure, I'm not saying Crean isn't cutting corners here and there, because it's likely most every coach does. But, it's not as egregious as Sampson.

The difference is, he hasn't been caught. Between his graduation rate, never being slapped by the NCAA and the character of players he recruits, I'd say he's a bit better suited to lead a team at IU than Sampson.
  • splenda · 10 months ago
Yes, Marquette won a title in 1977. But when Crean took over at Marquette, it was in danger of becoming another DePaul or Providence -- a small Catholic college with great history that was no longer able to compete in bigtime college basketball. Marquette basketball did not begin with Tom Crean. But if he hadn't been successful, it might have all but ended with Tom Crean.

When you get busted on a little hanky panky, the smart man backs off for a while. Doing it again, well, it is a sign of arrogance or stupidity.
  • JamesHardy · 10 months ago
UM...if I remember correctly...Ellis and Bassett were near the point where they were throwing blows with opposing players a couple times last year. And I know for a FACT that I called them out for it. The difference??? Crean has the testicular fortitude to sit a player, even if it IS his top scorer, to teach a LIFE-LESSON! KS on the other hand...keep playing fellas...you can take anger management and drug rehab AFTER its too late to help!

IF THAT’S EVEN HIS REAL NAME

When Will Leitch left Deadspin, so did everything that made that site readable. The pornstachioed douchebag who took over for him writes with the depth and perspicacity of a limerick on the bathroom walls. Good to see all of his writers are sinking to his level.

Great article. Keep up the good work.

"I have indeed been to Bloomington, and it’s pretty much my favorite place on Earth."

    Ditto.
