Did that just happen? Yes, it did

First, the good things about tonight (or last night depending on when you read this.)

– Purdue lost. Some of their fans were sitting directly in front of us. I got to watch them leave Conseco Fieldhouse extremely pissed off. The night seemed to be off to a brilliant s ... Continue reading »

  • I was there as well BigA. Damn that was crazy. As for purdue fans me and my dad were in the middle of about 30 fans and it was awesome to watch them all leave dejected. As for IU OUCH!!!! That was the most depressed I have ever been after a game. The thing is they did not deserve to win that game. When that pass was caught everyone new it was going in. I'm tired of this season so much stuff has gone and honestly I'm ready for it to end. While I would love for IU to make a run it's not going to happen. This team is tired and well not very smart basketball wise. To many stupid plays and as for Gordon ouch not good. I really don't know how he will fit in the NBA. I know he has the potential but damn EJ hit a shot and stop turning the ball over. What is he like 10 for his last 50 some from three. Man this sucks.
  • Looks like Jamarcus and some Minnesota player knocked into DJ before he had a chance to jump and swat the ball away from Barfenbagger. There were some players banging into each other and DJ got shoved from behind, pushed out of position, and that allowed the catch and shot. The thing is, IU should never have been in that position. We should have been up by 13 at that point in the game. F*ing Dakich, F*ing Sampson, F*ing lack of desire, drive, enthusiasm, preparedness. F*ing Hoosiers.
  • Yep it is all bs at this point. Still good old DD had no idea how to coach and it has been a joke with him as coach. Yet RG wanted to make the old brass happy so he did it. Do not name the guy the players want. Next coach Pitino interested- Pearl interested-Floyd interested. RG will say fuck them and hire his own guy and fuck us all again. How can this guy even walk around campus anymore let alone hire a coach.
  • This time next weekt he rumors will start flying, Big A and E get ready.....the IU coaching rumors will be HOT and HEAVY, and I am more looking forward to that than the tourney....

    Now who has a bracket?
  • I went to IU from 84 to 88 and it was really a pleasure watching IU basketball and I was fortunate to be at IU when we won our last NCAA championship. Even during down / rebuilding seasons, the team always played hard, smart and gave their best every single game. I honestly feel very bad for DJ. A perfect example of true leadership. This guy went trough the most while at IU and still manged to overcome all these adversities.
  • I was there. I was with a group of 3 Purdue and 3 IU fans (and yes, I take pleasure at a Purdue loss but I respect their team, unlike the Illini).
    Anyway, my expert analysis:
    1) we dig a huge hole, like we've been doing recently
    2) expend a lot of energy, effort and time to come back (think if we had handled Minnesota like they should have been handled, we could have rested our guys and blown Illinois out of Conseco)
    3) Eric Gordon's shot has left. I agree with Terry Hutchens. Its time for someone to say to Eric, ":Maybe another year will be good for you as a player..." then again its hard to say that when he does not know who his coach will be, he has a lottery ticket that might decrease in value if he stays...
    4) I love DJ, he's a monster (but if he or Gordon had hit their FTs down the stretch, we win that game)
    5) I was sitting about 15 feet from Devin Ebanks, he seemed to be getting more text messages than even Kelvin could have been sending
    6) Jamarcus Ellis. Enigma. One that should just play basketball
    7) DeAndre Thomas played hard and well. Still I noticed that he does not think that he ever fouls anyone and that if he does get called, he usually goes right after a guy with reckless abandon.
In sum, we're probably looking at a 6 seed and a 0-1 or a 1-1 NCAA run. A shame for the team
  • Gordon just shot another 3..........Clank

lets face it Dakich sucks as a head coach...he looked like a deer in headlights last night....these guys have no intention of listening to him...i remember close to the end of the game in a TO Crawford was in the 5 on the floor and in the huddle he was at the back talking to Thomas while Dakich was talking...

anyway we deserved that loss...we let them roll by not playing any DF to start the game and then all we had to do was make a few FT's to win the game and they choke(EG,DJ)

thanks to DJ for playing with you usual heart and passion...but man GET AHOLD OF THIS TEAM!!!! Be a leader on the floor instead of pounding your chest...yell at the other players and tell them to just do their job...

i'd say we are a 6 seed at best

oh yeah Gordon just shot another 3...........Clank!
  • After I got over wanting to break shit for letting that shot happen...I wasn't really that depressed.

The last few seconds were just a perfect snapshot. It was a microcosm of the entire season. DJ White plays gritty and tough (not perfect...but he does everything he can to help this team win) and the rest of the team just flat out chokes. Gordon disappoints the Hoosiers by not being able to hit a big shot when we need it. The two things we do well - shoot free throws and hit threes - failed us miserably.

I wanted a six seed anyway. That way we'll face the 11 seed, 3 seed, and then 2 seed in the Sweet 16, not facing a 1 seed until the Elite 8 and a chance for a trip to the Final Four, and hopefully by then, the one seed has been eliminated.

Let's face it...IU does better at stepping up to play better teams, so let's hold out that small glimmer of hope that the Hoosiers can actually step up and play some inspired basketball. I say a six seed won't be that bad. We have 3 seed talent so playing a 3 and a 2 as a six seed isn't all that horrible. Do I think all this is going to happen and we make a run...not really...but I still have that last little sliver of hope in my shredded heart.
  • reminds me of when punk ass luke recker hit a shot at the buzzer in the big ten tourney.its hard to beat a team 3 times but we had it.i hate tubby but even saul could out coach DD. BRINGBACKBOBBY
  • Well put on the seeding. I've never gotten too hung up on that anyway....I mean shit...if you're gonna win it all...it don't matter...gotta beat the field.
  • Well said, I'm with you!!
  • Thanks DJ , for the memories... Wash the rest of this team away.. and start over. Ellis is a thug..Ole Tubby comes back to show that he is still a great X & O s coach. This team has lost its way... Well I guess we are a Football school anyway!...
  • Fudge sickles!!! I'm over the ranting and raving. Gonna get up for at least one more game. I think we'll win a couple 3 in the tourney.

I would really like for some of you whippersnappers up there on campus to start pushing for DJ's jersey to be retired...for real. Organize and get it done...eloquently and judiciously. He has been the leader, the glue, the face and the "team" of this team for the past 4 years. He has been the only semblance of what IU b-ball is all about. I hope I get a chance to meet that fine YOUNG man one day. Come on guys...you can get it done...HOIST THE 3!
  • we dont retire numbers at iu.remember dane fife wore 11 thats zeeks number
  • Hey...is there any way to get the poll changed to: 7th Seed, 8th Seed, 9th Seed, OR NIT?
  • I think Gordon's left wrist is bothering him more than he lets on. He injured that back in January and claimed it wasn't a very big deal back then, but he still has it taped for every game. I can't think of any other reason that a player who hit so many big shots so often early in the season would be slumping this badly.
  • I have thought the exact same thing for the last month. What has disappointed me the most is that EJ hasn't seemed to progress, but regress since his great start. I don't know if that is because of the coaching situation, injuries, etc., but while I have loved having him on the team, he certainly has not lived up to the potential he flashed in 2007. Depending on who we hire, he could benefit from a 2nd season, but I don't think he wants to be here anymore.
  • Dakich is a joke. They threw away the season by having this guy coach, he is completely overmatched out there. 2 best players in the big 10 and they get outplayed by Minn, pathetic.
  • I'm not going to call him a joke, but he definately doesn't seem to have the fire anymore to be a head coach. It will be interesting to see who is on the short list of coaches. Personally, I want a young, hungry coach who's ready to take on a top flight program. I want the next Billy Donovan :)

On a side note, I can't ever remember a stranger, more dispiriting 25 win season. I still blame Myles Brand for this. His vendetta/hatred of IU has cost us another coach and another chance at glory. He is everything I despise about the NCAA.
  • Myles. His parents must have hated him to name him that.
  • I just hope we get a 5 seed so we can be a 1 and done team, and look forward to the next 3 REBUILDING years
  • Once I saw Ted Hillary as our official, I knew we where in trouble.
  • My prediction for new coach: Jamie Dixon. Other prediction is Eric will stay. Call me crazy, but I don't think he wants to leave IU without proving something and he hasn't played well at all lately and it doesn't look like we will do well in the NCAA. If we go to Final Four, he leave, less than Elite 8, he'll stay. Besides, he likes being a college student right? As for DJ, I feel terrible for the kid. He's leaving it on the floor every night. He knows he has to as his immediate future depends on it. Gordon's star is not burning as bright right now, but I wouldn't want him on any other team. His shot has to come back soon, right?
  • that substition of Crawford for Taber when we needed the rebound drives me nuts. That could of been another 2 pts right there but crawford lost the rebound. i know i's wishing to say but it would be nice if these guys realized they can't play down to their opponents and at this time of year they have to bring it every game. Everybody thinks they can beat everybody but if you think thte win is already there for you then yoru gonna lose.
  • DD's coaching stint can be summed up in 90 second clip of the game last night. DJ was shooting FTs with just over 8 min to go in the 2nd half. DJ made the first one and looked at the scoreboard. He yelled to the bench to get him a sub. DD was stunned...acted like..."why you wanna come out?" DJ yelled at the bench again to get him a sub. SO, D. Thomas comes off the bench....DJ makes the 2nd FT....comes to the bench to tell DD that he just wanted a quick breather to get him through the "under 8 minute TV timeout". DD was like.."oh wow, what a great idea"....So then the commentators (you know the retarded one from BTN) makes the comment..."WOW, WHAT A BRILLIANT COACHING MOVE BY COACH DAKICH TO GET DJ WHITE A BREATHER BEFORE THE 8 MINUTE TV TIMEOUT." I about threw my remote through the TV.

DD was shown several times down the stretch of that game sitting on the sidelines with his face in his hands and head hanging. Maybe the kids weren't executing his offense or defense...maybe the kids didn't do what he drew up in a timeout....maybe, he had a headache....all i know is, these are ALL things that HE IS IN CONTROL of!!!!

IF he wonders why he's lost control of this team...he simply needs to look in the mirror. If Ellis' problems were so bad that Ellis needed suspended...then DD needs to look at his decision to send the message to the rest of the players (I intentionally refuse to use the word TEAM) that its okay to be a THUG and a JERK and an IMMATURE BRAT....I don't blame Ellis, I blame DD. GET RID OF HIM....LET RAY TAKE THE players THROUGH THE NCAAs!!!!
  • Why isn't McGee getting any pt? Is he that bad? Could we use him to spell someone for a few minutes? We are real thin since Rat left and Holman is hurt. Can McGee come in and contribute in some way, such as defense or rebounding or something?
  • My question exactly. Can any 6-7, 215-pound good athlete be so bad that he can't play at all for a team lacking depth? He was highly regarded in high school and has been practicing with IU for an entire season. If he hasn't been developed enough to be of some value by now, it must be the coaches' fault. If it's an attitude problem, why not just drop him from the team?
  • the fact is that this team (except DJ) gave up on this season three weeks ago. never in my lifetime has there been an IU team that has been more painful and more frustrating to root for. ever since the uconn game, this entire season has been a disaster.

i really, really want to believe that they can rally together and win a few in the tournament and possibly get to the sweet 16. more realistically however, they'll get a 6 and get bounced in the first round by an 11. with the way that IU has been playing over the past three weeks, what could possibly indicate that they even have a chance to get past the first weekend in the NCAAs?
  • Self-imposed Post Season ban is looking pretty good right about now. This team isn't going anywhere in the tourney...5-seed and the 12 beating a 5 every year is looking right about where we are headed, unfortunately. Save the future of the program Mr. Greenspan and pull us out of the tourney before our ticket is even punched.
  • gordon doesnt even look like he knows where he is out there and he hasn't since sampson left. He clearly signed up to play for sampson and not indiana university
  • North Carolina was pretty much in the same situation today...up by 2 points with sec to go, virginia tech ball and what do they do BAT THE FREAKIN BALL. They put someone tall on the inbounder that timed the toss perfectly...he tips the ball thus starting the clock, tarheels win. WHY OHHHH WHY couldnt the hoosiers pull that off...unbelievable!!!
  • Gordon Shoots Another 3.........................Clank
  • At about mid-year, I found myself concerned that this team was peaking too early and playing its best basketball in December/January and by February/March, they'd have nothing left. I wouldn't have thought that it would be for the reasons it has been but that's exactly what happened. This team isn't shooting well, isn't hitting their free throws and isn't taking care of the basketball (a recurring theme all season) and teams that do those three things well are the teams that make deep runs in the tournament. This is a team that could very well lose a 12-5 matchup if they're paired with a team against a team like Kent State or another mid-major upstart. ESPN's Joe Lunardi has the Hoosiers playing the 18-13 Oregon Ducks in the first round in Denver. This is easily one of the most talented yet the most frustrating Hoosier teams I've seen in recent years and they need to figure out a way to turn this thing around.
