Dave Telep talks Ebanks, Mackey and Roth

As you know, Inside the Hall recently caught up with Scout.com National Recruiting Director Dave Telep to talk IU recruiting. We asked Dave for the lowdown on the 2008 recruiting class and here’s what he had to say.

On Devin Ebanks:

    I wonder if any of these guys will be at Midnight Madness....

    Does anyone know roughly when the "basketball part" of Hoosier Hysteria will begin? I really don't want to go to a volleyball game and sit there.....I really don't no offense to IU volleyballers!

    When Dave Telep said of Bud Mackey, "He's probably the same level prospect." did he mean that Mackey is the same level prospect as Devin Ebanks? This is what I think he meant, but I am not certain.

    Does anyone have a comparison for Bud Mackey. I know I have heard the Ebanks, carmello comparisons.....I will say again don't be surprised if EJ is still at IU next year to play with Ebanks

    Alan,

    I think Dave meant that as good as Mackey is right now, he's got a very high ceiling as well. At least that's the way I interpreted it.

    Kelin, I've heard Ebanks is in the same mold as Rudy Gay (i.e. long, lean and a stud athlete). Melo had a much more mature body as a freshman in terms of strength as well as a certain killer instinct that can't be taught. Not sure it's fair to put that much pressure on Ebanks to have the same effect on our team as Melo did for Syracuse. Although, I can't say the same thing about EJ -- we do expect the world from him!

    I've also heard the Ebanks-Rudy Gay comparison and that's a pretty good player to be compared to.

    As far as a comparison for Mackey, I had a hard time coming up with one. Mackey himself said he's a better shooting version of Rajon Rondo, which I can buy into somewhat.
