Where did you read or see a quote that our players were going to tank it. Tanking it to me means we'll play but only to lose whereas threatning to walk means we're not going to play period.

IU doesn't have the balls to do what they should do. They will suspend him hoping that they can get rid of him without an expensive fight.

They never have the conviction to do it right the first time. When they screw around like this they always end up hurting the program.

Then they try go cheap or PC and get an even bigger loser and bring on more criticism. Good God, fire Sampson, let the players do what they will, then hire a real winner that doesn't need to cheat.

I've heard indefinite suspension as well. That way they could "continue to investigate things" and keep the players mildly happy. Don't know how valid that is. As with everything today until we hear from Greenspan directly it really doesn't matter what is said. Let's remember the coaching search, he played it insanely close to the vest. We didn't know anything despite all the rumors.

The star is reporting that the boycott is essentially on d.j.'s shoulders. He did not deny a boycott but rather said that it could or could not happen. Hopefully the 4 oclock presser will bring some light on all of these different stories. I dont know if i am the only one but i am tired of hering from all of these "sources" and i would like to hear some truth. No matter what GO HOOSIERS!

If they tank this game against Northwestern, cancel the season, revoke their scholarships, and get some kids from the HPER that would die to put on that uniform for one game. If we lose out on a chance to win the BIG 10 title because they are trying to prove a point, I will have a hard time rooting for any of them again.

If the players walk, that would be so weak! The coach cheated and lied! They have a bigger obligation to the team, the school and more so to themselves. How immature and ignorant and regrettable (for them if they do indeed walk, they will one day really regret it). Any of you guys play ball? We might need some walk ons.

I'm with you here Mikey! I've had so much respect for DJ White the past couple of years and he's actually become one of my all-time favorite IU players. I sure hope he's not leading this boycott! I know he's been through a lot but I would picture him as the guy to put the team on his shoulders and weather the storm once again, not add to the torture and pain of the IU Nation!!! Man, I hope this s**t isn't true (about the walkout)!!!

I would give my left nut to suit up in the cream and crimson. I'll go to b-town and play. When is practice? The players owe it to themselves and their fans to play, especially in this situation where the coach has lied and cheated repeatedly. Wins are very important to me, but not important enough to jeapardize the integrity of IU basketball. When these players look at the big picture and think they would not regret playing 20 years down the road, they are terribly mistaken. This problem needs to be resolved and I can only hope that we can bring in a coach that can salvage this program.

Here's the problem with Dakich...he was not brought in by Sampson..he was hired by the university to be the Director of Basketball Operations, then was moved into the assistant position when Senderoff took the fall for the allegations.

It makes more sense that McCallum take over if it's a suspension, because at least then there's a chance that Sampson says "hey guys...I'm just suspended. Let's not get carried away. We can get through this...Ray has been with me for four years and knows his stuff...let's show the nation what IU basketball can do in the face of adversity."

He can say something similar about Dakich (though I don't know he would in either case), but it just makes more sense to go with McCallum...and it would mean a lot more to the players if Sampson said that about MCallum rather than Dakich, who was not a Sampson guy.

I think that would be the best case scenario...IF Sampson imparts upon the players the importance to stay on and play for each other and the school. If he just bolts with his middle finger in the air, then I could see the players jumping ship.

Oh come on! I can't buy this crap. DJ White didn't boycott when Mike Davis was canned (or cordially resigned) and DJ was practically family to that guy! Why would he lead a revolt when a coach, who did cheat, was asked to resign after only two seasons with him. He's being projected now as a first round NBA pick. Eric Gordon showed up today. Why do think he did? Not because he's so loyal to IU, but because he doesn't want to hurt his draft stock!!! Why would DJ take that chance. Maybe the players were just given the choice to stay home today for practice since it's been such a tough week!!!

This is all me just being an optimist. Man, I hope I'm right on this!!!

"Dan Dakich is coaching IU’s basketball team in practice, but a number of the key Hoosier players are not there.
As far as we can tell, D.J. White, Jamarcus Ellis, Armon Bassett, Jordan Crawford, DeAndre Thomas and Brandon McGee are not at practice. That leaves IU with seven players practicing and six not there.
We don’t know exactly what that means, but it seems ominous after the reports today that players have been talking about a walk-out for Saturday’s game at Northwestern. There has been no official word on who will be available for that game.
The players who are practicing are playing against team managers. Dakich told the players that it is important that the players finish what Kelvin Sampson started this season.
Assistant coach Jeff Meyer is participating in the practice. Assistant coach Ray McCallum is not there." Big Gulp

Those missing practice are probably gone next year anyway. The JC guys will drop down a division and play right away, the others will graduate and/or transfer and sit a year. KS may step in and convince them otherwise, however with McCullum missing practice, there appears to be more going on than we know. It might be a replay of if you're a Knight guy-go away and now, if you're a Sampson guy-you can also go away. The players involved may decide they're Sampson guys.

I don't know what's going on...no one really does, but if Sampson has addressed the players and did not tell them to "suck it up...if you want to show your support for me, you get out on that court and show the ENTIRE nation, not just IU nation how much you've improved as a team this season. Go out there and win the Big Ten, get to a Final Four and show what kind of men you really are." ....if he's talked to the players and hasn't said something like that, I'm severely disappointed in him.

I respect the players' decision if they don't play...they're just kids trying to support the man they love. If Sampson doesn't have the integrity to tell them they need to play, he's not the person I hoped he was...

I thought in my lifetime that the Mike Davis final two years were the lowest point of my IU fan life but TODAY is actually the lowest point. My excitement for this season has gone from 100 to 1....I remember when the schedule came out I began to check airfare from Indy to San Antonio, feeling some confidence that we could make a run.....

The barnstorming games were awesome..........

Midnight Madness was chilling and electric as I have ever seen it......finally seeing Ej in those candy stripes I felt this is our year. Icing on the cake was seeing the talent of Jordan, Jamarcus, and the progress of DT....

Fast forward to today................I thought that KS would be canned or suspended. I thought the players would keep a low profile and focus on finishing the season. I thought Dak would take over or McCallum and rally the troops....I thought the rest of the season would begin tomorrow........

NOW...to be honest.....My dissapointment in KS could turn to anger if he doesn't get these guys on the right path to continue...........My thoughts on Dj could be tarnished if he doesn't step up and take a stance for his senior year...which has become more about HIM than EJ..........today I can give them a pass on skipping practice....if they do not play tomorrow.......I don't know what I would feel.....This really sucks....

if these other kids are serious about not playing, then i encourage it. i hope they beat the crap out of northwestern and then when the other players want to return dakish says, "no, not untll you've been trough a week of practice"...therefore allowing these players with rare minutes an opportunity to play two games.

taber and white could beat northwestern down low...i really think so...the question is can the guards keep up with the defensive stops from the perimeter. i think they can, honestly.

if i were dakich i would keep the starters out as long as possible tomorrow night and let those that showed up for practice play the game.

this is iu basketball, and it's time dakich shows them what it's all about. you don't skip practice and not play...PERIOD!!!! i don't care what the excuse is...give credit to those who did show up (including gordon and stemler who i am probably most proud of).

by the way, i've been a softie for bassett and white all year...but i must say, i am all about seeing lance stemler, mike white, and eric gordon do well now...and that isn't meant to leave out taber, ahfield, finklemeijer, and the rest of the gang who i hope do extremely well too...i'm all for those kids like the "tom coverdales" who will play for the sake of the university and the state of indiana regardless of the coach!

if dj white doesn't show up for tomorrow night's game he has completely lost my excitement for a big ten p.o.y. coming from indiana unless it happens to be kyle taber or eric gordon. i have no tolerance for crybabies regardless of the situation................

..........okay, if you have a brother, sister, mother, or father overseas at war then i understand...but if you are crying over a coach then i don't have any sympathy. if you want to give sympathy where sympathy is due then give it to those of us who never gave up, stuck it out, and earned a college diploma (regardless of the odds) and (without the taxpayers from the state of indiana giving us a scholarship) to PLAY A GAME WE LOVE.

i'll probably be hated on again for voicing my opinion. let me say right here and right now....i want these players to finish out the season because i see the potential for a surprise to the tournament's committee as well as other teams invited to march madness. iu has a shot at a final four spot...i truly believe with the right attitude they will make it. AND I WOULD WANT NOTHING MORE THAN TO HAVE DJ WHITE LEAD HIS TEAM TO A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP but if players don't show up tomorrow night then i say let those who did show up at practice finish off the season...it's only fair. dj white has his chance to continue to be one of my all-time favorite hoosiers (right up there with tom coverdale and aj moye of semi-recent) if he chooses to try. if he doesn't, then he's quickly knocked down to a "jay edwards type-of-player"...and i mean that.

no, these kids don't deserve what happened to them, but they should deal with it. i sure wish my college education was payed for. if it were, then i wouldn't be paying on it for what seems the rest of my life.

let the six eligible and healthy players play against northwestern. let the remainder of the team know that it doesn't matter what the situation is, if you have a scholarship to play for iu then you have a commitment to the university and its fans to show up for practice.

Is it possible Sampson is meeting with the team before the press conference and that's why it's taking so long? Regardess today has been an absolute mess. I'm just glad it's the weekend. I can't handle another day at office while trying to stay updated on the soap opera that is IU basketball. ITH has done a great job, thanks guys. The Hoosier Scoop has also been on it. An earlier post mentioned McCallum leaving out of loyalty to Samspson. Anything else on this?

man this has dragged to the point that if sampson goes, I want greenspan and 3/4 of trustees of IU to leave ASAP. We F*&cd ourselves over, by not being professional. Jay Bilas nailed this to a tee. We should have waited till the end of the season and thats it no point of discution. When you give the national media a deadline, we induce ourselves into more drama then is necesary. Oy vey. I love my hoosiers, but I long for better days.

As I predicted and feared , trying to take action now vs end of season and to line it all up in a week was GROSSLY UNWISE but typical of amatuers.

My greatest fear was taking action that "effed" with the wonderful team .............now they have hosed that too...........perhaps ruined Dakich in the process.

I love the players no matter they do at this point they have been poorly led by everyone

I feel so bad for DJ. First he had to watch Coach Davis get run off and now this. He must hate the words Indiana Hoosiers. I'm pretty disgusted with IU as well. Greenspan has to go for letting this situation get out of control not to mention the Lady hoops purdue coaching fiasco, the football program going back intot he crapper and the decline of men's soccer.

In respect though he had nothing to do with the football end of things, it was going up. But hopefully McRobbie sees how crazy this is getting and it adds to the laundry list of reasons Greenspawn should be fired.

I agree Timmy. In the long run we want these kids to be part something special every year, and I believe we failed them. I'll never be able to forget how badly we treated them.

Let's hope for the best with Dakich the rest of the season. He has a lot of coaching experience and had pretty good success at Bowling Green, not exactly a traditional MAC power. Dealt with some injuries, etc.

I think he will serve as a good Band-Aid...but we need a national coaching search after this. For now, just have to turn the attention to the rest of the season and try not to worry about who's going to coach next year's team.

$750,000 buyout!?! Now that's a great lesson for an institution of learning to send. Who said "cheaters never prosper", that must have been a Purdue grad. If he's guilty, do the dirty work: investigate, get your ducks in a row, fire him, and beat his butt in court!

We'll see if the NCAA was just out to get Sampson or whether they are going to make a statement to schools who hire "recovering" violators...

My initial thought is that the NCAA should take it pretty easy on Indiana. The school itself has virtually NO history or violations in any program, self-reported the violations, and basically forced Sampson to resign when the NCAA reported back that Sampson lied to them and IU.

Granted, I'm an IU fan and I don't want us to be hammered by the NCAA, but it just seems logical. Now, what constitutes going easy? No ban at all on post season? How many more lost scholarships? 1-year ban? 2-year ban? Recruiting restrictions on coaches? Regular reports to mommy (I mean the NCAA)....?

Who exactly are we going to get to coach this team next year. I don't want Dakich. I like the guy, but I don't want to go through another Mike Davis saga. I think if we go deep into the post season they will hire him even though it would be an external inspiration that promoted the success just like when Knight left. I liked Sampson, but he is gone and it was probably stupid to hire him in the first place. Who do we get??? We haven't had a national championship in 21 years or an outright big ten tittle in 15 years. We have yet to win a Big 10 tournament tittle. Things seemed to be getting on the right track with a coach who had a good 10 seasons left., but like I said thats over. Are good coaches even going to consider IU anymore? I love my hoosiers. I'm just as devoted as anyone on this page and I'm concerned. I want a coach who is going to keep our team in tact. A coach who can salvage our recruiting class. A coach that can almost immediately pick up where sampson left off. A coach who will be around for a while and make us forget about this mess....and the bob knight mess. A coach at the college level is the most important. Look at Kentucky....they are changing and suffering. I'm sure once coach k leaves duke and ol' roy boy is done at NC they will suck for a while too. Infact they have both proven that. Now is our chance. We been through the douche bag assistant. We've tried to cut corners and hire a guy who didn't quite fit the program. Now we have to get this right. We have to get the right guy and not mess around. We have to get the guy who will lead IU to the top when duke and NC loose their coaches. Who?? Who is it that can do this?

Thank God that the Sampson debacle is over, now to finish the season and move on to keeping the program at a powerhouse level. IU nation needs to get behind the players and show them full support. Who cares what they have said today or that they did not attend practice. Their world has just been rocked by losing their coach and they were saying and doing things in an emotional state (how many of us would have been different at 20?).
I have a hard time imagining that DJ White would lead this team to quit the season. He has been such a class act his whole carreer at IU, I think he will do the right thing. Rewind to Dane Fife a few years ago, he woke up after taking some time (albeit they did make Mike Davis the coach). I really believe DJ will lead this team the rest of the year and I look for them to do some good things to close out the season (maybe not '89 Wolveriens things, but many games won).
I am very excited about who the next coach will be. They need to move quickly and keep the nucleous of kids intact next year and possibly salvage some of the recruits that already have interest in IU.

They should still do the right thing and give the players a release from their letters of intent. Yes, the kids should come to the school to play for Indiana--it's not "Kelvin Sampson" written across the uniform. I would have the recruits talk to the new head coach and make a decision then. if they still want out, then good luck, young man.

When you "rewind" Fife, remember that Brand put the screws to him and the rest of the players by "postponing" Knight's firing until the start of the school year. By instituting his zero tolerance and getting two weeks of school in the books, the players would have lost a full year of eligibility if they left. Brand knew what he was doing, and he didn't care if he screwed the kids. He certainly is the right man for the job he has now.
