Inside the Hall: Bud Mackey arrested on drug charges

  • Tom · 2 years ago
He's 18, charged with not possession but trafficking within 1000 yards of school, not marijuana ,not just cocaine, but crack cocaine--playing for IU isn't a choice, unfortunately playing in prison maybe. He's been my favorite recruit, but this one will not be probation unless its reduced to possession. In any event he's an adult under the law but hopefully his first offense. I haven't walked in his shoes , but for most of us we can't understand risking his future. As for IU, that is the least of his problems right now.

    Tom,

I'm not going to totally write off the kid until all of the facts come out. Like I said in my post, his career at IU takes a backseat at this point. Whatever ends up happening, the most important thing is that he gets his life headed in the right direction. He obviously has a lot more important things to worry about at this point than basketball.

maybe he has a split personality. Posters on PEEGS from Georgetown say such things as"He's a thug" and "Cops have been watching him for awhile". In any event trafficking in a school zone unless he cops a plea and/or cops a plea to finger others will be a felony with jail time .

Whatever the case may be, all I can go by are my interactions with the kid which have all been positive. I also know others who would say the same thing.

As far as what's being said right now on various message boards, I'll try to stay away from that stuff and wait for the facts to come out.

Good kids make dumb mistakes...all the time. I don't think he's a "thug" at all. I just wish he realized how great of an opportunity he has as a D-I prospect loaded with potential. I really hope the initial news reports are wrong and this situation gets hashed out in positive way for Bud. Not for the sake of IU basketball, but for the sake of his future. It is always hard seeing something like this happen to an 18 year old kid.

Hey guys whats up. I am from Scott County and had some classes with Bud, i didn't see this coming at all. I haven't seen him since i graduated though so he could've gotten involved in the wrong stuff over the summer but he always seemed like a real clean guy.

i don't know what to think. he was my favorite recruit. i don't know what to think now. how? why? i just don't get it. we'll see how it plays out

Like Sherron Wilkerson, let him go now....

I hope for his sake that this is some sort of misunderstood case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Coke is a bad deal, not to be taken lightly, so hopefully the facts in the case won't point to this kid being a user or dealer. If he is guilty, I hope he gets his life in order

The details in the Herald Leader this morning don't sound good. I would say Mackey playing at IU are the least of his worries right now. $10,000 cash bond and he smelled like marijuana when they caught him. Not good.

    Inexcusable.

Right now I will just say...wow....I don't know what to think but IU bball is not even important right now, his life is.....

over on the star some bloggers think coach sampson should be fired over this. they are nuts and must be fair weather fans or purdue freaks. a coach can't control how stupid a kid is. sad sad sad....
  • Big A · 2 years ago
Sampson's only responsibility in this is to look at the facts and make the right call. He has no control over what Mackey does because he's not under his supervision at IU. There were no signs of this being a problem, therefore, I wouldn't blame Sampson in this situation and to suggest his firing is downright ridiculous.

Unless there is a case of mistaken identity or something we don't know about, most people would argue that it would be best to cut ties with Mackey. However, I think Sampson will hear all of the facts before making a decision on Mackey's future at IU.

Right on Big A. Like always.

I agree in allowing all the facts to come out. As we all know Bud Mackey "will" play college basketball somewhere, if it is not IU as we live in a forgiving society.

The major concerning/disturbing part for me is ...it is one thing to use/smell like marijuana it is entire other beast to have crack cocaine. That is a serious serious drug that I hope he is not using. Even having access to that drug could mean you are hanging with some serious/shady people.

We will see how this story plays out.....for all involved. I will stay away from Indystar blog cause the stupidity on there I read about KS was idiotic. For that matter if you fire him fire his parents, teachers, etc etc.

A basketball grant is a privilege and a right. Innocent until proven guilty is for the legal system not for the basketball program. Smelling of marijuana and cutting class is enough to raise a red-flag for me. No athlete's on court abilities are worth his on court abilities.

just re-read my post meant (A basketball grant is a privilege and NOT a RIGHT.
