I have no special knowledge except a chat with Pat Knight while we were betting on horses at Saratoga this past summer. I believe the money is not a factor whatsoever and if he comes and if he accepts the money he will donate it. I almost think the offer is insulting to his principles and it is more likely to keep him away than attract him.

I think only a few people know him well enough to understand his approach to this issue. I think Pat had thoughts but was unsure himself how this would turn out.

The caveat in the settlement that states that the resolution of this issue creates no obligation on Knight to attend the ceremonies certainly indicates that this is a negotiated settlement and not an action taken by IU unilaterally. Therefore if Knight participated in the talks, I've got to think that it will not have a negative effect on his decision to attend the HOF induction. He just wants to make sure it doesn't look like he can be bought off. We all already knew that, but Bob is Bob.

In the end it could be as simple as setting aside all the last differences and sticking points leading up to the grand reconciliation.

The fact that it is signed by Knight's attorneys as well as IU's attorney makes clear that this is an agreement, not merely an offer.

Good stuff, Ryan. I'll chime in with my two cents: If Knight comes, great. He deserves to be recognized. If he doesn't, well, it's on him and I think Indiana needs to move on. Fred Glass and the rest of the IU Athletics department shouldn't be forced to run through obstacle after obstacle to get Knight to appear. My guess is that he'll string this on without public comment until the last minute and not come. Hopefully that's not the case, that's just the vibe I get.

Doing it "his way" = stubborn and petulant. Journalists must believe good writing does not bring them their notoriety due. Always have to take the shots to sell more product. The money won't even be in the equation for RMK's decision.

Remember the poor guy at the NCAA's who made a mistake about Bob's post game appearance? Bob publicly ripped him mercilessly and just because he could. Same with the kid who called him "Knight". Bob is a master at taking shots at people so I have no sympathy for the man in that regard. Reap as ye' shall sow.

I agree that the money isn't a factor.

No one has talked to him in months, he didn't take a visit to Hoosier Hysteria and has no official visit planned to Bloomington.

And judging by the results so far, it doesn't seem like many people are confident he'll be a Hoosier.

Reap as ye shall sow is certainly something Coach Knight would believe propitious to live by. The fellow (poor???) knew who RMK was and what dealing with him would be like. He should of kept his mouth shut so as not to make the error for which Coach Knight promptly reminded to keep quiet so he wouldn't cause himself anymore misery. As far as the student calling the Coach by his last was not just dumb but dam disrespectful. Coach Knight gave him a free lesson in social skills that the kids parents forgot to teach or emphasis enough to him. I am sure he did both individuals some good for future success.

I'm with GF Dave on this one. I think almost all people are of the mind that they appreciate what Bob done for IU and foremost for IU bball. Having said that you seem to be one of the people that like to find a way to justify anything and everything he did regardless of what it was and that is one of the reasons he acquired some of the bad traits he had. Giving people an unmerciful amount of hell, in public at that, over simple mistakes is not what I would call helping to make them more successfull in life. It had reached a point that his many accomplisments were being overshadowed by his many uncalled for outbursts. This is excatly the kind of thing that he would not have put up with for even a second from anyone else but was OK for him to do. Double standard ? I think alot of people thought, and rightfully so, that no one, including Bob, was bigger than IU bball itself. Agree with Alex in that IU has done everything they can to heal the old wounds and that Bob has got to grab ahold of one of the many olive branches that have been extended to him by so many people at IU sooner rather than later. If he cannot do this than do the induction, move on and let him make the next move in the healing which may never come because he is who he is. The many overtures made towards him to show up is the main reason I took exception to the article at ESPN.com with Coach K when he said IU needed to do a whole lot more in trying to patch things up with Bob before he should show up cause as far as I can tell just about everything he said they needed to do has been done or is being done already. I like and respect you Coach K but it sounds like you are getting your facts from Bob and not checking them out for yourself. Should we really rename our hallowed AH after someone that will not even show up for his own HOF induction, punched and shoved a long time devoted assistant coach because he didn't like what he overheard him say, sued IU over and over and alot of other things to numerous to list. Having said all this it sounds like I think IU should not be inducting him which is not the case. I think they should be. I just hope he can show up for it cause if the situation was turned around and he was the one talking to someone in his situation he would probably tell them to do what he probably will not. Hell if nothing else he could make a strong point with all of the ones he blames by showing them all the good things that he can still bring about by just showing up. If all of his bad feelings come largely from being removed from a place he so dearly loved and care about than he can surely do something as simple as show up for one night for his own HOF induction. After all it was not the fans or what IU bball stands for or what IU bball is that removed him and ironically that is what he would be helping to honor by showing up to be honored himself because of those very things.

I grew up with IU bb and Coach (Knight) was my coach, faults aside. I think Crean is great, but I want Coach back also. It's not the same without Coach.

If you don't think you can deal with someone why would put yourself in a position so it can be proved. Everyone that ever read a sports section knows how focused and competitive RMK is. Why do something to challenge him? I've never of heard one person that has ever bested him eyeball to eyeball. No one will change when they are batting 1000. Understand what he is; that being an around the clock goal oriented teacher that doesn't allow undisciplined gray areas. Right or wrong that is it. The equation is simple - 2+2, waters wet, skunks stink. His strong character won't allow him to change so you adapt or deal with him (good luck). So put "reap as ye shall sow" on his tombstone fore it will be as fitting as putting his name on a new fieldhouse at IU.

Saying no one that went eyeball to eyeball with Bob ever bested him is seen that way only by the people that thought that anything that he done was justified in some way. I think the sports reporters know excatly what they are doing when they deal with Bob, they are baiting him to go off and he swallows it hook line and sinker alot of the time and then he and others think he has "bested" them when all he has done is excatly what they wanted him to do which is give every kind of sports reporter something to headline thier report with whether it be in print, audio, video or any conbination of the three. They will almost all use it that way a way that reflects badly on the university as well as himself. He likes to quote from alot of things that have to do with history so maybe he should remember the one that says "if you do not learn from your mistakes in the past you are doomed to repeat them". The differing views being bantered back and forth here about him, amongst fellow IU fans, is but one of many things that would take a back seat with him making the effort to show up. Even somebody as tough and gruff as Bob cannot tell me that he, as well as the rest of the Hoosier Nation, would not have a very large lump in thier throat and be fighting back the tears when he finally steps back onto the court to a long thunderous standing ovation. I can think of several good things to numerous to list that would come from him showing up and not one single bad thing but then again one has to remember it is Bob we are dealing with here. THAT is the kind of headline or soundbite that he as well as Hoosier Nation deserves.

I would say that in back room barganing, the payment will have to happen for Knight to start the return to the IU fold, however, (un)successfull!!!
